Birds of a Feather

THIS FEMALE Anna’s Hummingbird has dilgently cared for her chicks since they hatched more than 20 days ago in a quiet corner of an East Long Beach neighborhood. Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas. There are about 360 species. They are specialized for feeding on nectar but all species also consume insects or spiders. The male hummingbird does not mate for life nor does he help the female in any way to build her nest or care for her chicks. He simply waits to mate with the next females that enter his territory.
