Ease World Hunger

The 2022 “CROPWalk for Hunger” starts at 2:30 p.m. (1:30 registration) at the Los Altos United Methodist Church at 5950 E. Willow St. on Sunday, Oct. 16 (United Nations World Food Day).

World Food Day celebrates the founding of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945 and was first celebrated in 1981.

This year’s theme is “Safer food, better health” with more than 100 sponsored 5K walkers, raising funds for Church World Service (an international relief agency with very low administrative overhead)and 5 local charities including Catholic Charities, United Community Outreach, Lutheran Social Services, Su Casa Family Crisis & Support Center and Christian Outreach in Action.

This event has taken place every year since 1975 and has raised over $500K for this cause. In 2020 – for only the one year because of COVID – we switched to a car parade…but ordinarily we are walkers who embrace the theme “We walk because they walk,” a reference to how people in Third World countries get around without cars and trucks.

Sign up for the Walk at crophungerwalk.org. For more information call (562) 983-1665.

‘Lucy the Owl’

To celebrate the owl, which is one of the Mayan animals most popular and powerful symbols in Mayan mythology and culture, Hotel Maya will host “Lucy the Owl” a real, live animal experience in the sculpture garden adjacent to Fuego for educational purposes and complimentary photos on Sunday, Oct. 16 from noon to 3 p.m.

The Mayan God of death chose owls as its companion and it was believed wisdom and clairvoyance were characteristics of the owl. Owls were said to be harbingers of death by the Mayans. They were night guardians of the jungle and if one flew by your home, someone would die within two weeks.

In the spirit of honoring these powerful symbols of Mayan mythology and culture Hotel Maya is featuring a different Mayan animal once a month during Sunday brunch from noon to 3 p.m. The “Maya-Animals” Experience will include live dance performances, music, storytelling, animal demonstrations, lectures and many other exciting events for both kids and adults to enjoy.
