Alamitos Beach near 12th Place. After a 70-year record of lifeguard towers free of arson, in the early morning an arsonist unknown torched the only tower painted rainbow-colors in honor of Long Beach Pride. Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said the city will restore the tower, “The gayer, the better,” suggesting the slogan “the gayer mayor.”

Thursday, March 25

2038 E. 10th St. At 5:10 p.m., a Northgate Market security guard confronted a man who refused to don a mask and then resisted ejection. The maskless man was taken to the ground. Don’t bother asking who was that unmasked man?

Friday, March 26

Del Amo Blvd. and Paramount Blvd. Certain to generate a quick police response, at 1 p.m. a man was throwing candles from the Deputy Thomas Albanese Memorial into the street.

2800 block of Bellflower Blvd. At 9:10 p.m., about 100 street racing style vehicles assembled for the suspected intention to ogle, mingle, rev engines or possibly do donuts. Sources claimed street racing was not part of the agenda.

South Street and Downey Road. At 9:15 p.m. two separately exclusive vehicle groups, a 4x4 off road group and a race car group, totaling 30 cars in all, were hanging with their fellow buffs at a parking lot in an entirely different zip code. Police decisions about break up or not to break up were being mulled.

Saturday, March 27

Broadway and Pacific. At 1:30 p.m., protestors with signage showed up at the newly improved City Hall to draw attention to tenant and renter eviction rights.

3700 block of E. Esther St. At 5 p.m. police responded to reports of multiple gunshots. In a press release, police said of the resident and shooter, “approximately six suspects forced their way into his residence and were attempting to rob him when he shot at them. Upon arrival, officers located two black male suspects suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso.” According to police, “a male white adult discharged a firearm at the suspects, striking two of them. One male decedent was located inside the residence, and the other was located on the front walkway of the residence. All other suspects fled the scene either on-foot or possibly in a vehicle.” One of the deceased was 17-year-old De Corion Sanders. “The residents involved have been cooperating with the investigation, which remains ongoing. Detectives served a search warrant on the residence and seized large quantities of marijuana, firearms, and cash.“

Sunday, March 28

Vicinity of Termino Avenue and 11th Street. At 8:10 a.m. officers tried to pull over a stolen car ditched by the suspect who fled on foot. The police employed the trinity of capture: a perimeter, a helicopter and a K9. The suspect was taken in for treatment of minor K9 bites.

2100 block of W. 17th Street. At 11 p.m., gunfire from a passing vehicle hit a male sitting in his parked car. He went to the west division police substation with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. He told police he was shot by someone in a green vehicle. Police stopped a green vehicle near Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Fe Avenue and found a shooting tool kit: gun, ammunition, bullet casings and arrested 52-year-old Roderick Zeigler on suspicion of attempted murder, carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle.

Tuesday, March 30

4600 block of Long Beach Boulevard. At 12:30 p.m., a pipe clogged by tree roots and 600 gallons of sewage combined to spill across the street from Scherer Park. Luckily the Long Beach Water Department had the vacuum trailers and crews to suck up the overflow, sanitize and wash down the area. The Long Beach Fire Department briefly blocked south bound traffic and called in a hazardous materials team. The tree roots remained silent as they would.

Wednesday, March 31

1100 block of E. Carson St. At 2:50 p.m., a man clad in underwear only was bargain shopping. Hopefully, something stylish for 99 cents.

Friday, April 2

1900 block of W. Summit. At 2 a.m., an argument broke out between three men in a garage. Two men were shot; one was taken to the hospital. Long Beach resident 40-year-old Daniel Jacinto died; the third man left the scene. Gang stuff suspected.

2800 block of Golden Avenue. At 5:15 a.m. police called to help firefighters were “confronted” by a woman carrying a rifle. Repeated attempts to communicate “with the woman in an effort to get her out of the residence and negotiate her surrender” were made. Police said they saw the woman point a rifle at them and an officer-involved shooting occurred. She died at the scene. Police entered the house and located Justin Lomako, 49, of Long Beach, deceased, “with a serious laceration to his neck.” A roommate told of her being distraught after she found him unresponsive.
