Long Beach Blvd. and 52nd St. In probable pursuit of road rage, Miguel Larios, 26, drove a GMC pickup “at a high rate of speed,” collided with a Toyota Corolla whose driver was trying to pull away from the curb near Mountain View Street and Long Beach Boulevard, struck a parked pickup truck. Larios and a 10-year-old boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but an eight-month pregnant 23-year-old woman and her unborn baby died at the hospital. Larios was arrested on two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, one count of driving under the influence and one count of child endangerment; held on $200,000 bail.

Sunday, August 8

Marine Stadium. At 1 p.m., two side-by-side racing boats going around 110 mph at the Long Beach Sprint Nationals glanced off each other. One craft flipped multiple times, ejecting the driver, Jay Hart , 37, of Lake Havasu, who later died at the hospital.

Aquarium Way. At 9 p.m., a motorist found the top level of the aquarium parking structure perfect for a series of donuts. In a designated day of donut devolution; more doofus donut doings at Loma Ave. and 17th St. and a third helping of donuts at Orange Ave. and Artesia Blvd. at 11 p.m.

1700 block of Harbor Ave. A 10:43 p.m., after a robbery at a grocery store in the 1600 block of east Willow Street, Signal Hill Police tried to stop a silver 2020 Honda Accord, losing it at Pacific Avenue and Willow Street. Long Beach Police dispatch got the message, the unoccupied car was spotted at 10:54 p.m. The driver, 28-year-old Leonides Enriquez of Bellflower ran southbound on Harbor Avenue, was arrested near Esther Street, a firearm in his pant pocket. An officer-involved shooting occurred during the arrest. Taken to a hospital in critical condition, Enriquez was booked for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition – $35,000 bail.

Monday, Aug. 9

Pacific Ave. and Willard St. A two-car accident at 1:42 a.m., Catrina Carrillo-Ruiz, 19, of Long Beach, the driver of a Toyota Camry and her passenger. Frances Rodriguez, 23, died from their injuries. The 44-year-old Los Angeles woman driver of a Honda and a 30-year-old Gardena male passenger were taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Wednesday, August 11

2000 block of Pacific Ave. At 4:08 p.m., suspects in a passing vehicle fired shots at the group of men, striking one. Hearing the shots, police arrived to find bullet casings and a parked unoccupied vehicle struck by gunfire, nary a victim or suspect. At the hospital, victim interviewing was blunted by his critical but stable medical condition.

Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia Ave. Walking home from Pick-Your-Part in Wilmington, reporter Kirt Ramirez saw a young Black male at a bus-stop; a carload of young Hispanic cruisers yelled, “what’s happening sweetie?” The bus-stop man took off running at 4:40 p.m.

Thursday, August 12

1200 block of East 4th St. At 2 a.m., as a group of bystanders were attempting to detain a shooting suspect, he fled on foot, firing his handgun toward arriving officers. Police established a perimeter. The SWAT team responded and for four hours attempted to negotiate with the suspect. Moderate force was then used to take the suspect, Arturo Reyes Ortiz, 28, of Long Beach into custody. The suspect sustained a non-serious upper body injury from K-9 contact. At a hospital, he was booked for attempted murder. Detectives believe he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs and his act of violence was not random.

Seventh Street near Dawson Ave. At 8:30 p.m., a woman in an unmarked crosswalk was struck by an eastbound Toyota truck. The driver drove away as did a blue sport utility vehicle that also ran over the woman, who later died at a hospital. Too much leaving, too little concern.

Friday, August 13

Pacific Coast Highway and Daisy Ave. Open for business at 6 p.m., a Friday the 13th DUI checkpoint yielded seven drivers arrested for DUI, 17 cited for being unlicensed, one cited for operating a vehicle with a suspended/revoked license and one cited for unsafe driving. Bad luck all around.

Saturday, August 14

1900 block of E. Pacific Coast Hwy. At 3:48 a.m., a man stabbed in the upper body drove himself home; a friend later took him to the hospital.

Anaheim St. and Long Beach Blvd. Guy at a bus-stop at 3:20 p.m., waved a hatchet, then put it in the front part of his shorts, a one-way ticket to an owie!

1400 block of Gaviota Ave. At 9:45 p.m., a man received gunshot wounds of the non-life-threatening variety; two parked cars also hit.

Sunday, August 15

Long Beach Boulevard near 14th St. At 2:30 a.m., approximately five men approached, shot the victim in the upper and lower body with non-life-threatening wounds. Status of shooters unknown.
