60th St. and Atlantic Ave. At 10:30 p.m., at least 60 cars in a “street takeover.” One vehicle actually stopped by the authorities.

710 Freeway under the 9th Street bridge. At 5:30 a.m., several vehicles struck and killed a homeless man, then left the scene as did the initial involved vehicle.

5400 block of Linden Ave. At 12:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a traffic collision, finding a deceased male stabbing victim laying in the driveway of a residence, no vehicle. At 12:55, police found an abandoned sedan about a half-mile from where the man was found in an alley at the 200 block of East 56th Street. Investigators found evidence “suggesting the stabbing occurred inside the car” by a passenger. The suspect was gone.

1600 W. Willow St., Signal Hill. At 12:55 p.m., a man with a knife stabbed another man at a Food-4-Less, then fled the scene. Furnished with a description, a Signal Hill police officer attempted to detain Phillip Lopez, 42, who drew a knife and allegedly attempted to attack the officer, who fired his gun, killing Lopez in front of Sunnyside Cemetery. Almost all streets, avenues and roads in the area blocked off were reopened at 9 p.m.

2200 block of Bellflower. A visitor to a well-known department store was asked to leave the premises at 2:15 p.m. In response, at 2:25 p.m., he began throwing things. Having migrated from the original problem, he motivated to an area between the produce and the electronic sections to continue the toss-a-thon. As patrons were about to evacuate, the guy self-evacuated.

Fourth and Redondo Ave. A truck with a large flag was honking, passing on the right and waving at anyone who might care about his finely-tuned show-off tendencies at 8:50 a.m.

Shoreline Drive. At 4:55 p.m., a woman suffered a fall. The responding person had to give detailed directions to the area along Shoreline Drive and Shoreline Village to get to the correct area behind the grandstands.

3700 block of Canehill Ave. near Conant and Palo Verde Ave. According to a posting on Nextdoor, at 7:35 pm “my 15-year-old daughter was walking our lab puppy in front of Patrick Henry. A black Mustang with two Hispanic males drove up to her, slowed down, drove off as another car approached, then circled back doing this three times until they pulled over yelling at her. The passenger male, about 30, black hair began to open his car door and as he did, she took off running home. They drove after her but as it was dark she was able to run and hide. She ran home crying and shaking. The police came and helicopter was out. It was dark, so she didn’t see a plate.”

1300 block of Magnolia. At 2:15 a.m., a shooting left a man with a “non-life-threatening” wound, while another man fled to parts unknown.

Los Coyotes and Harvey Way. At 10 p.m., as noted in Nextdoor, “some knucklehead was doing donuts in the intersection. It looked like the car was going to jump from the main street onto the frontage road on the west side of Los Coyotes.” Instead, the car took off down Harvey Way to other donut grounds. Another response, “There’s a Camaro the last couple nights just going crazy from Harvey to Carson doing burn outs. Maybe one day he will hit a tree and learn his lesson!” drew rebukes for being too severe.

East Del Amo Blvd on-ramp to the northbound 710. At 4:48 a.m., the California Highway Patrol found a deceased motorcyclist. There was no indication whether it was a hit-and-run. CHP shut down the eastbound and westbound on-ramps to the freeway while investigating.

6200 block of E. Spring St. At 3:15 p.m. LBUSD school safety officer Eddie Gonzalez witnessed two females in a fight. As he approached, 18-year-old Mona Rodriguez, attempted to leave with two others in a sedan, which drove very near Gonzalez, who fired a shot into the car’s back window. The bullet hit Rodriguez in the head. Transported to Memorial Hospital, Rodriguez died on  Oct. 5. Gonzales was placed on paid administrative leave, then fired by LBUSD on Oct. 6. During the subsequent police investigation, both Palo Verde Ave. and Spring St. were shut down to traffic for several hours. Additional security was added at Millikan High School as students arrived at school the next morning.  Tuesday, Sept. 28

6400 block of Pacific Coast Hwy. A body was found in late morning at a location close to the 2nd and PCH retail center. Foul play is not suspected.

4500 block of Pacific Coast Hwy. At 10:30 pm, a woman sitting in her parked vehicle robbed of her wallet at gunpoint was shot by the two male robbers, who foot-fled, wallet in hand. She was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
