Friday, November 12

Artesia Boulevard west of Atlantic Avenue. David Bermudez, 72, was crossing Artesia outside of a crosswalk, when he was struck at 6:20 p.m. A dark Toyota Camry fled westbound on Artesia. On November 22, Bermudez died of his injuries.

Southbound 710 Freeway near 9th St. At 11:45 p.m., the driver of a 1996 Toyota 4Runner traveling northbound in the southbound lanes collided with the freeway guardrail and trailer portion of a southbound tractor-trailer. The Long Beach Fire Department extricated the 4Runner driver, Robert Nunez, 68 from Montebello and transported him to a local hospital. The tractor-trailer driver, a 23-year-old resident of Bakersfield, remained on scene, cooperated with the investigation. On November 19, police found out Nunez passed away on November 13.

Saturday, November 13

3800 block of Willow St. In the parking lot of the East Division Police substation, Long Beach police officer Chris Zamora, 44, was found dead from a gunshot wound, an apparent suicide victim.

Willow St. and Studebaker Rd. At 4 p.m., Willow to the 605 Freeway turned motorcycle racetrack, bikers racing at over 100 mph, race fans recording the action.

Tuesday, November 16

Orange Ave. and Willow St. At 2:40 p.m., a speeding westbound Willow vehicle crashed out at the cemetery. Two males exited as an officer observed the action from the get-go, then requested permission to pursue on foot. Considering it was a stolen car, this could have become a very grave matter. The pair was thusly detained.

Wednesday, November 17

Neopolitan Lane in Naples. A motor vehicle doing donuts at the upscale Naples lane at 10:45 p.m., heading out toward Second Street. Probably different from the donut-doing car at Cherry and Bixby at 11 p.m., only the tire tracks know for sure. Second Street, more donuts.

Sunday, November 21

Stearns St. east of Studebaker Rd. area. “This morning at 2:30, some guy decided to do donuts and lost control of his car, taking out a street sign and our little free library,” said a Nextdoor poster. “The police caught him, thankfully. Since he was kind enough to leave a piece of his car in our yard and paint on city property he is being charged.” Among damaged books, Dean Koontz’ “Watchers,” another Nextdoor-er responded, “Sorry the library got destroyed. I love his books or novels. I don’t think there is one of his that I have not read.”

Monday, November 22

South St. at Paramount Blvd. In a 5:45 a.m. police pursuit, three occupants of one car split in as many directions at the completion of their early morning escapade, two escaping into the early morning mists, one was detained or possibly arrested.

Tuesday, November 23

Pacific Ave. and 12th St. At 5:52 p.m., a 2016 Nissan Sentra driven northbound by 68-year-old Tyrone Tate of Long Beach struck a 62-year-old female Long Beach resident as she was attempting to cross Pacific Avenue outside of a crosswalk. Tate was arrested for DUI, carrying a concealed firearm. Bail at $100,000. 

2600 block of Lakewood Blvd. At 6:14 p.m., a 17-year-old male shot in the upper body drove himself to a hospital. After a foot-pursuit, police detained a 15-year-old boy, arrested 20-year-old Earl Stanley Tate of Los Angeles for a parole violation, held without bail. Police recovered two guns with gang detectives investigating, so there.

Wednesday, November 24

7575 E. Carson St. A grey truck drove through various contiguous communities and two freeways the wrong way and the correct way in a police pursuit. It all ended at 2:15 a.m. in front of a Long Beach Towne Center business, which the cops hope the courts may give to the possible murder suspect.

Walnut Ave. north of Wardlow Rd. Describing the avenue as a racetrack, a Nextdoor poster said, at 5:30 p.m., “a drunk chick in a huge truck side-swiped three parked cars, then totaled mine and sent it into the fire hydrant in front of our house. Be careful out there! And Happy Thanksgiving!” Responses varied. “Yay, drunk chicks! No accountability if we’re cute!” or “who knew chicks could drive let alone drink?  I thought they had to be full grown chickens to be licensed,” not to mention turkeys.

Thursday, November 25

3100 block of Claremore Ave. At 2 p.m., responding to a domestic violence call, police found 43-year-old Joseph Memeghini barricaded inside a home. SWAT came out and did what they do for an arrest. Police said the “attempted assault with a deadly weapon” charges involved a vehicle. Bail for assault with a deadly weapon, battery and resisting arrest at $50,000.

Atlantic Ave. and Atlantic Dr. After an hour visiting Carson, Compton and East Rancho Dominguez, a police pursuit of a stolen Nature’s Harvest box passed Artesia and Butler at 9:45 p.m., a 25-year-old woman arrested for DUI/drugs, evading arrest, driving a stolen vehicle and assault on a peace officer.

Friday, November 26

Lakewood Blvd. and 405 Freeway. At 9 p.m. a car drove off the road, hit a sign and guard rail, then caught fire. A woman was found dead in the driver’s seat.
