5400 block of Ocean Blvd. At 4:30 a.m., two men sleeping in a parked car heard distinct sawing made by several men attempting to steal the catalytic converter. Confronting the thieves, one man was shot for his efforts. The saw-men fled the scene in a small black car. The victim went to a hospital.

400 block of E. Market. At 10:41 p.m., in the midst of a street takeover, several teens engaged in setting a Christmas tree on fire.

Wednesday, January 26

710 and 91 Freeways. A man climbed onto the ramp from the southbound 710 Freeway to the eastbound 91 Freeway at 6:30 a.m., then threatened to jump. Authorities shut down the appropriate freeways and set up an inflatable airbag beneath the overpass, but he jumped and missed it at 8:15 a.m. Long Beach Fire Capt. Matt Dobberpuhl said, “He purposefully missed the airbag. They were moving it back and forth trying to keep up with him, but he evaded them.”

Atlantic Ave. and Fifth St. At 9:30 a.m., a fully grown woman with no pants on drew the attention of polite society. At 10:25, same woman, except this time, she was exposing her upper half.

Thursday, January 27

1600 block of E. First St. Long Beach Police Department’s Warrant Detail arrested Christopher Royal Starr, a 33-year-old resident of Long Beach in connection to eight sexual batteries that occurred between May 30 and Sept. 24, 2021. Booked on three counts of sexual battery, he was held on $100,000 bail.

Orange Ave. and Market St. At 10:30 p.m., 25 cars arrived to block driveways, one driver showing off a weapon. Donuts served at 10:40 or so. A responding police helicopter spotted a silver Dodge Charger, or Challenger, not unlike the one that fled police a few days earlier, do donuts. The chopper followed the Dodge on Atlantic Avenue to the onramp onto the southbound lanes of 405, which put him in an entirely different jurisdiction at 10:47 p.m.

Friday, January 28

710 Freeway on-ramp from Ocean Blvd. At 2:07 a.m., a 2013 Honda Civic driven by a 23-year-old male from Compton failed to turn, colliding with a metal guard rail. Death resulted. Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

Sunday, January 30

Wardlow Rd. and Chatwin St. At 10 a.m., according to Jerry Shultz, “a drunk driver was heading westbound on at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and hit the curb, lost a wheel, took out a sign post and then hit a tree. The sign post moved. The tree did not. The driver, a minor, was arrested for DUI and an open bottle of tequila was found in his vehicle.” The Nextdoor response, “I think the tree will survive.”

200 block of Atlantic Ave. At 9:26 p.m., Charles Ogletree, 42. got in an argument with another male, who fired a gun at Ogletree, causing injuries that led to his death. The shooter fled the apartment on foot immediately after the shooting.

Tuesday, February 1

Fourth St. and Orange Ave. A topless woman in grey sweats was talking to herself as she ran in and out of traffic at 8:50 a.m.

Wednesday, February 2

Atlantic Ave. and Esther St. At 6:34 p.m., several adult males approached a man as he sat in his vehicle. One of the men fired at the victim, 31-year-old Nashon Wall, a resident of Signal Hill. The suspects ran into a nearby apartment complex, which was later searched by the SWAT team for evidence related to the murder.

Loynes Rd. and Studebaker Rd. At 9 p.m., a car with two passengers took a detour into a ditch, a road feature reminiscent of the stagecoach era.

Thursday, February 3

Willow St. and Lakewood Blvd. A Nextdoor-er posed the question, what is that “god-awful loudspeaker noise” at 3:55 a.m.? Responses varied from music criticism: “Sounds like a cross between and trumpet and a whale … or the sound track to an alien invasion movie.” Others were more technical. “Is someone dragging an empty oil tanker down the freeway?” alternatively, “Do we think it is a homeless person playing an instrument under the freeway bridge?” Police investigated. Turned out to be none of the above: simply scheduled Long Beach Airport maintenance.

200 block of Obispo Ave. After arresting a man wanted for a five-year-old traffic warrant at a nearby Taco Bell, at 9:30 a.m., seven O.C. plainclothes officers knocked on his door saying “we have your folder.” Nobody home, he’d just been arrested. His arrest warrant for not appearing in court after paying the fine was because he assumed his payment closed the case. Off to jail, counting the weekend, a four-day slammer stay until Monday court. Moral of the story: in O.C., follow the rules, even if they are not made clear.

Friday, February 4

4400 block of East 10th St. At 5:38 p.m., a boy at a bus stop; a man approached him and stabbed him in the upper body. Taken to a nearby hospital by his parent, he had non-life-threatening injuries.
