Friday, February 3

Seventh St. and Orange Ave. At 1:36 a.m., two men sitting at a bus stop, a vehicle arrived with several men exiting, arguing with the two men, who both ran off, one got away, one man suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds. With their stabbing complete, the chasers fled in their vehicle.

Arbor St. and Virginia Ave. At 6:16 p.m., police pulled over a vehicle of a driver on probation. His vehicle searched, police found a stolen loaded firearm and several rounds of ammunition. His motel room yielded an additional firearm, extended magazine, approximately three pounds of methamphetamine. Arrested and booked, Ricky Mitchell, a 41-year-old resident of Long Beach for a cook’s tour of handgun and ammunition offenses; bail: $35,000.

1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. At 10:28 p.m., an argument, a man stabbed in a non-life-threatening way to the upper body. A male suspect ran into an available alley, refused to comply with commands to surrender. Police deployed a K9 Unit, a use of force occurred, and the suspect, Andrew Martinez, a 33-year-old resident of Long Beach was booked for attempted murder and resisting arrest. Bail: $1,000,000.

Saturday, February 4

Atlantic Ave. and Roosevelt Rd. At 5:20 a.m., a vehicle traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue left the roadway, collided with a tree, killing a woman passenger. The male adult driver was transported to a local hospital for his serious injuries.

Spring St. and Palo Verde Ave. At 2:35 p.m., a 2007 Lincoln Continental speeding in a parking lot hit four parked cars as well as a 68-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy. The Lincoln, driven by a 90-year-old woman sped out of the parking lot at 6400 E. Spring Street, hit a tree in front of the 2900 block of Palo Verde Avenue where police found her trapped inside. The man sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital while the 10-year-old boy was released to his parents after only sustaining minor injuries, the female driver later died in a hospital.

Sunday, February 5

1800 block of Locust Ave. At 9:28 p.m., a man was shot in the lower body, then refused to cooperate with the police investigation into his non-life-threatening injuries. Additionally, one man and one woman interfered with the investigation, drawing an arrest for obstruction-related charges. Thought to be gang-related, the investigation is ongoing.

2100 Pasadena Ave. At 11:28 p.m., a man argued with another man, who solved the dispute by shooting him, then leaving before authorities arrived. As the wounds were non-life-threatening, police found evidence that matched the story, including casings.

Monday, February 6

226 St. and Coyote Creek. At 4:00 a.m., a man was stabbed in the upper body by a man he didn’t know.

Friday, February 10

3750 block of Stearnlee Ave. At 7 p.m., on Nextdoor, “several neighbors and my wife and I smelled gas at the same time. We are at Ebell and Stearnlee. It smelled like propane.” From that odiferous evidence, the inescapable conclusion was “Maybe that’s why our gas bills are so high.”

91 Freeway near the 710 exit. At 10 p.m., a gunfight by a black Honda Civic versus a white eastbound SUV. A rear Honda driver’s side passenger leaned against the top of the car and fired at least two shots. A shooter in the SUV rolled down the driver’s window, fired back. Drivers then decided they’d rather be on another freeway after all, so they took the exit.

Seventh St. and Santiago Ave. At 8:00 p.m., a golf course building caught fire, then a nearby second and a third building caught fire. Arson suspected.

Monday, February 13

11th St. and Gaviota Ave. At 6:40 p.m., two men driving southbound on Gaviota Avenue heard gunfire coming from neither knew where. At their destination, they saw the vehicle had been struck by gunfire.

Tuesday, February 14

Pacific Coast Hwy. and Los Angeles River. At 6:03 a.m. a man was stabbed multiple times in the upper body, declared dead at the scene.

Pacific Coast Hwy. and Harbor Ave. At 9:18 a.m., Long Beach resident Kevin Evans, 59, fell off his bike, then apparently was run over by a semi-truck, the driver of which may not have known what happened.

Thursday, February 16

52nd Street and Pacific Ave. At 7:38 p.m., an uninjured male adult stated he was walking in a poorly lit area when he was approached by an unknown subject. After a brief verbal exchange, the gunman fired, missing him, then fled in a motor vehicle. Evidence, bullet casings, abounded.

Friday, February 17

Northbound 405 at the 22 Freeway. At 9 p.m., a blue Nissan with four or five young male occupants commuting with speeds up to 120 mph from Poway in San Diego County after allegedly burglarizing a gun safe, the CHP in pursuit. Off at the 105 Freeway, slowing at Imperial Courts in Watts, four occupants spurted from the car in two directions. One blended in with other youths at the scene, later arrested. The car kept going, crashing at a Blue Line track barrier blocks away, the driver removed by medics. Gun safe? Not really.
