Second St. and Bay Shore Ave. Call it the Shootout at the Second Street Bridge, at 3:45 p.m. a possibly homeless gunslinger winged a second homeless guy in the hand, aka the upper body. Officers detained the suspected shooter and recovered a firearm. The wounded man was taken to the hospital to treat injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

Said a Nextdoor witness to the aftermath, “There was a clearly ‘without a home’ man in his 30s/40s held down on his front by a female law enforcement officer. The ‘man without a home’ guy had a bicycle with a trailer attached with lots of different objects.” Traffic diverted, bridge closed for a spell, worse consequences avoided.

Los Coyotes Diag. and Deborah St. At 5 a.m., a Long Beach Fire paramedic unit, not to be confused with the rogue paramedic unit often seen parked at San Anseline Avenue and Wardlow Road, crashed against a fence in a planter. Overtime suspected.

Heartwell Park. At 2 p.m., a soccer squabble, athletic antagonism, competitive chaos caused the arrival of six black and white squad SUVs adjacent to the rest room structure. Who was detained, who won, who scored first, none of this noted in the official scorecard.

1400 block of Chestnut Ave. At 8:29 p.m., a man was shot in the upper and lower body. It’s suspected the victim was speaking to a known female when he was approached by an unknown man who fired. The suspect fled on foot; the victim is recovering in stable condition.

San Anseline Ave. and Parkcrest St. At noon, police ended a vehicle and foot pursuit at Heartwell Park of one male and one female grand theft suspects, who then morphed into arrestees.

700 block of 45th St. At 3:13 p.m., in a hit-and-run, the reckless driver of a Ford truck lost control and struck a man, who died at the hospital. Police determined the “The Ford pinned the pedestrian between the two vehicles before continuing eastbound and striking another parked vehicle,” then left the scene.

Shortly thereafter, police located a Ford pickup truck matching the suspect vehicle description at 56th Street and Rose Avenue, arrested the driver, 42-year-old Jose Trujillo of Long Beach on suspicion of murder, driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury and hit-and-run resulting in death or injury. Bail: $2 million.

Clark Ave. at Willow St. At 7:30 a.m. a vehicle with one person inside crashed into a canal. The driver taken to the hospital, condition unknown. 

Anaheim St. and Cedar Ave. At 10:44 p.m., a male victim of a hit-and-run was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

100 block of East 1st St. At 3:40 p.m., Luis Fernando Polita, 25, of Los Angeles was stabbed in his upper body on board the Los Angeles Metro Rail by three unknown males who boarded in Long Beach and immediately approached and stabbed the victim multiple times. Polita later died. The suspects fled on foot from the Metro station near 1st Street and Pine Avenue. On Friday, Akili Collins, 18, was arrested for murder and Melake Daniel, 19, was arrested for being an accessory after the fact near the 900 block of East Broadway. Collins’ bail: $2 million; Daniel’s bail: $1 million.

Hill St. and Lemon Ave. At 11 p.m., a man was approached by a man who demanded he give up his belongings. Although he complied, the suspect shot him anyway, fleeing the scene on foot. The victim, who had been shot in the lower body, refused to cooperate with police and turned down medical attention to his apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

5100 block of Via Veranada Ave. At 5 a.m., a woman standing near a residence was struck in the upper body by gunfire from an unknown direction. At the hospital, she was in critical but stable condition.

Bellflower Blvd. and Los Coyotes Diag. At 8 a.m. a woman driving westbound on Los Coyotes Diagonal ran a red light and collided with two other vehicles; taken to a hospital with apparently non-life-threatening injuries.

2300 block of Pasadena Ave. At 6:03 p.m., a man argued with another man, a shooting, a hospital stay with non-life-threatening injuries to the lower body.

Market St. and Cedar Ave. At 12:41 a.m., the sound of gunfire abounded. It began with a shooting during an argument with a group. The shooter fled to a nearby apartment building. As police were establishing a perimeter around the apartment, they heard shots several blocks to their west. Additional officers responded to that secondary scene, locating casings near Market Street and Pacific Avenue.

Thirty minutes later, the officers at Market Street and Cedar Avenue heard more shots fired at police several blocks to their east. No officers nor vehicles were struck by the gunfire. SWAT was activated, issued callouts for the surrender, then conducted a search warrant on the location. Officers arrested David Gonzalesantiago, 30, of Long Beach for prohibited possession of ammunition. Bail: $35,000. Whether these three shootings are connected is unknown.

Downtown. During and just after the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, there was a whole lotta shooting goin’ on, apparently by the same gunslinger. It began at 1 p.m. at the 600 block of Ocean Boulevard and was over at 4:46 p.m., when an officer shot the suspect, 39-year-old Esmundo Chavarin of Long Beach  in a not-life-threatening way. A firearm was recovered at the scene. No officers were injured but one victim was shot.  Police said, “it is believed the same suspect could be responsible for all incidents.” The other shootings were on Atlantic Avenue near Seventh Street at 3 p.m., where, a man was reportedly shot and wounded, again, not-life-threatening. Finally, at 4:44 p.m., a shooting at Third Street and Elm Avenue, no one hit.
