600 block of Pine Ave. At 1:40 a.m., with evidence of a shooting, police found a really good clue, a recovered firearm. Word is a man and a woman were arguing, the man battering the woman. As he fled, he fired an unknown number of rounds in the general direction of the victim. Both of these adults left the scene, leaving behind only the offending weapon for use as evidence.

Pacific Ocean. At 9:40 a.m., Long Beach authorities closed the ocean to wanna-be swimmers, surfers or those who just wanted to dip a toe after Downey dispatched sewage from Burns Avenue and Rives Avenue into the Los Angeles River, then the beaches. “Although our staff worked to set up containment to prevent sewage from reaching receiving waters, we estimate that 250,000 gallons of sewage reached the Los Angeles River before our crews could fully contain the sewage that spilled into a local storm drain,” sanitation district officials said. The spill was contained at 11:40 a.m., Downey authorities said, and sanitation teams have been cleaning the affected area, but that did little for the befouled beach.

4600 block of Long Beach Blvd. At 9:47 p.m., a woman was stabbed in a non-life-threatening way on both the upper and lower body after a known male adult suspect entered the victim’s residence, provoked a fight, striking her in the upper body with a blunt object and stabbing her in the lower body. 4000 block of Atlantic Ave. A 1:30 p.m. incident at GameStop was hardly a game, but a robbery in which the thief cleverly used scissors to cut tags off electronic games, using the scissors to threaten staff who approached. Loss amounted to approximately $500 worth of gaming supplies. He was last seen in a light colored SUV, southbound Atlantic Avenue, putting the cut into cut-rate swap meet merchandise.

South Street near Downey Ave. At 11:59 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies took a prisoner for a checkup at Lakewood Regional Medical Center. Apparently, they were hoping for good or at least better-than-average behavior, the kind that goes with neglecting to stay in his face, for at midnight, the prisoner left the center. Handcuffs in place. About four hours later, after checking very early morning shoppers at the Walmart on South Street in Long Beach, deputies found the full-time inmate, part-time patient, even though the store doesn’t open until six a.m. Said an online poster at the Lakewood Regional Crime Facebook page, “Glad they caught him, however, I’d run from that hospital too!”

Thursday, April 27

5600 block of E. Seventh St. At 10:30 p.m., a male driver parking his vehicle in a lot collided with another driver also parking. “The driver of the vehicle, a male adult suspect, exited the vehicle attempted to engage the victim in a verbal dispute, as the victim remained in his vehicle. This resulted in the suspect revealing a firearm and discharging one round into the victim’s vehicle.” Both parties then fled, the targeted victim to the 5200 block of Second Street where reported the crime. No injuries reported from the collision or the resultant encounter.

Carson St. and Paramount Ave. Garbed in a blue Members Only-looking jacket and riding a girlish baby blue beach cruiser, a tall guy shoplifted at Seven-11, pulling a machete when thrown out at 1 p.m., then tried to reclaim his machete from Seven-11 personnel. At other times, he attempted to sell his bike, then his machete, after the bike sale fell through.

Fourth St. and Orange Ave. At 10:15 p.m., two men argued, one pulled a gun, fired, missed. Both men then left, bullet casings the only proof of the impromptu event.
