7500 block of Carson Street. At 7:30 p.m., a young, clean-cut-looking male was sitting in a wheelchair in the center of Carson in heavy traffic across from the Towne Center. A passing driver, afraid he’d be hit, called 911 and described what he saw. The 911 operator commented, “Oh him again. We had someone go out and help him earlier.”

Southbound 405 Freeway near Cherry Avenue At 7:55 p.m., a CHP officer pulled up to a pre-existing accident when his vehicle was struck. After the driver of an older red Honda sedan, Karl Flores, 34, of Inglewood allegedly struck a man on a motorized scooter in the 7800 block of Manchester Avenue, Culver City. At 11 a.m., a police pursuit spanning 80 miles commenced, from Culver City, through Long Beach on the 405 Freeway at 12:30 p.m., ending when the suspect driver simply ran out of gas on the 5 Freeway in Camp Pendleton. After the CHP used a police dog and two rounds from a beanbag shotgun, Flores, who remained in the driver’s seat for 40 minutes, finally gave up with an apparent struggle.

Northbound Golden Avenue and Willow Street. At 6 p.m., a 64-year-old Long Beach female bicyclist was hit by a westbound Ford Explorer. When the signal changed to green, the collision occurred when the driver failed to see the woman was still in the intersection. Found lying in the northwest corner of the intersection, she was taken to a hospital. The SUV driver, a 50-year-old Long Beach resident, stopped and cooperated with authorities. The female bicyclist was pronounced dead four hours after the crash.

Saturday, January 6

Park Avenue near Anaheim Street. An apparently disabled vehicle with possible children inside took off as a CHP officer approached at 6:45 a.m. That’s when the pursuit began on the mean streets of the eastside. When the CHP asked for local assistance, police offered perimeter help in case of the almost inevitable “foot bail.” At 7:10, the car was on Spring passing Bellflower, then at Lakewood and Willow, last spotted at Anaheim and Cherry, then onto the 710 Freeway.

Monday, January 7

Southbound Lakewood Boulevard north of Willow Street. At noon., motorcyclist Corey Haggerty, 25, of Lakewood collided with a 2018 Ford Explorer SUV and was thrown to the middle of Lakewood Boulevard near his wrecked 2012 Honda CBR 600 motorcycle. The Ford Explorer SUV stopped about 80 feet beyond. Long Beach Fire paramedics determined victim Haggerty was deceased at the scene. The 49-year-old female driver of the SUV from Torrance, along with her passenger were uninjured as a result of the collision. Police determined Haggerty was riding south on Lakewood Boulevard in the number two lane at a high rate of speed and came in contact with the SUV, which had just exited from southbound 405 Freeway and was changing lanes to make a left turn onto Willow Street. The motorcyclist had an expired driver’s license, which did not have a motorcycle endorsement.

Carita Street and Clark Avenue. At 1:48 p.m., police were called out about a potentially explosive device on the sidewalk, which they rendered safe by exploding it, leaving dirt and debris on the sidewalk.

The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Don Campbell of Lakewood. Campbell was a retired sergeant from the Long Beach Police Department. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been requested to assist with the investigation to allow for grieving among department personnel. The investigation is ongoing.
