ON FRIDAY, MAY 15, shortly after 6 p.m. a large tree fell near Marwick Avenue and Mezzanine Way, toppling power lines as well. SCE repairman, above, required protective clothing from hundreds of displaced swarming bees the following morning.

May 20

Woodruff Ave. north of Willow St. At approximatelly 1:40 a.m. a woman walking in the number two lane (right lane) of southbound Woodruff Ave. is struck/killed by a vehicle also traveling southbound on Woodruff north of Deborah Street.  LBPD says the driver didn’t stop and fled the scene. The female pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene,  LBPD asks anyone who may have witnessed what took place to call LBPD’s Collision Investigation Detective David Lauro at (562) 570-7355.

5800 block of Adderley Dr. pick up truck stolen in overnight hours. Jerry Shultz’s South of Conant Neighborhood Watch reports stolen truck spotted by alert resident, recovered with some items gone.

May 17

2300 block Argonne Ave. Fire Engine 17 (funding restored by City Council in Sept. 2019 vote approving FY20 budget) responds to garage fire basically across the street from Fire Station 17. Engine 19 also responds.

5th St./Pacific Ave. 3:50 a.m. Man found in roadway, victim of hit and run driver.

May 16

Gaviota Ave. at E. 17th St. Fatal shooting. Victim is 27-year-old Gardena man. Witnesses say a male adult ran from the scene after the shooting. LBPD says motive unknown.

May 12

5500 block Ackerfield Ave. Approximately 5 p.m., nearby vehicle and a residential building, both unoccupied, struck by gunfire and several casings; no victims have been identified and no injuries have been reported

1700 block E. PCH At approximately 12:45 a.m. male adult struck by gunfire, victim believes shot came form a vehicle but unable to provide description.

May 11

Santa Fe Ave./Hill St. 59-year-old woman is killed while legally crossing the street, struck by one of two vehicles in alleged street race. One of the vehicles also collides with a third vehicle

May 7

710 freeway south of 405 freeway, CHP officer shoots/kills alleged knife-wielding man walking in freeway lanes at 11:30 p.m. CHP says it tried less than lethal force first but the man didn’t comply with commands

Atlantic Ave./20th St. Two vehicles collide, 26-year-old LB man driving one of the vehicles perishes.

May 2

1300 block Orange Ave., approximately 8:45 p.m. shots heard; officers find casings but no victims.

2100 block Locust Ave. At approximately 8:20 p.m., reports of gunfire heard, officers find shooting victim (man wounded) in 2200 block Earl Ave. with evidence of shooting in area of Locust Ave./Hill St. Vehicle in area also struck by gunfire.
