HASTA LA VISTA

Beachcomber reporter Kirt Ramirez escorts a robot from Merry’s store on Broadway in late January. After 14 years on Broadway near Temple Avenue, store owner Merry Colvin went out of business following the city’s road diet installation. As part of the store cleanup, Colvin had to get rid of everything including the tall, metal figure, which stood hidden near the rear exit for at least the past 10 years. “He secretly guarded the back door because you couldn’t see him at first glance,” Colvin said. “He was behind one of the dressing room tents.” Ramirez ended up taking home the unwanted freebie and later gave it to a 92-year-old Lakewood Village resident for him to display at Halloween. “His legacy lives on,” Colvin said. The robot was created by RAS-1, a renowned local musician and artist.
