Renovation Closes Skyroom, LB Cielo

Two popular Long Beach locations will be closed for two years starting April 30. Both the Long Beach Cielo and the Sky Room will be closing for renovations and be reopened as a part of the new Breakers Hotel.

A few weeks ago, The Rosensons family who owned the Breakers Hotel announced that they were handing ownership of the hotel to Pacific6, a California based investment and development partnership. This renovation includes both Cielo and Sky Room, as they’re a part of the property.

“We leave Long Beach and the building in the capable hands of Pacific6 to carry on this storied establishment’s already long legacy for many years to come,” said the Rosensons family in a statement.

The Rosensons will continue in new ventures, as they are going to be opening a couple of new businesses throughout the year.

The Breakers Hotel was first built in 1926. In 1938, Conrad Hilton the founder of the Hilton Hotel chain bought the hotel. He would go on to put a restaurant and nightclub on the hotel top floor. Since then, the Sky Room has gone through different changes. At a point during the 1980s and most of the 1990s the Sky Room was empty due to the hotel being used as a retirement home.

It wasn’t until 1997, when Bernard and Jonathan Rosensons bought the Breakers Hotel, that they were able to get special permission from the state to reopen the Sky Room in February 1998.

Since then, the Sky Room has been a hot attraction. It is a high-end restaurant with live music and entertainment and they have a business casual dress code. It serves a variety of food styles like American, French, seafood and steakhouses. It offers catering services and venues for weddings and other events.

According to its website the restaurant has drawn the presence of a lot of “Hollywood celebrities, politicians and world-renowned personalities of the time.”

Some of the restaurants most famous celebrity guests include Elizabeth Taylor, Clark Gable, Babe Ruth and Carey Grant.

Also, the restaurant has been the recipients of many awards such as the Open Table Diner Awards for most romantic restaurant, Trip Advisors Award of Excellence, AAA Four Diamond Award and many more.

Cielo is also going to be missed by many Long Beach residents. Originally titled Cantina Del Cielo before their 2014 remodeling, Cielo was first opened in 2007. It is a bar that served different drinks and Mexican food. It is well known for their happy hour, their popular cocktails and their view of the city.

Pacific6 has expressed interest in keeping these two hot stops open after their 2020 remodeling but has not been specific as to what, if any, changes there would be for the two businesses once they reopen.

For its last few days open, the Sky Room will have a special menu celebrating their 21 years in business with different items they have served over the years. Their “best of” menu will run from April 13 to their last day on April 29.
