San Anseline Avenue Drug House Bust

Staff Reports

In an Aug. 2 press release, Long Beach Police noted the arrest of Steve Burhmann, 65, on July 7 on felony possession of a controlled substance while armed, being a prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition, illegal possession of a firearm, and operating and owning a drug house, according to a police statement. He was held on $50,000 bail, posting bond a few days later.

According to a search warrant filed in Long Beach Superior Court, the investigation was the result of numerous community tips that began on June 8 when the department received a call about a possible drug sale involving two allegedly intoxicated suspects in the 3300 block of San Anseline Avenue, one block away from John Marshall Middle School.

The suspects were gone when officers arrived, according to the search warrant, but over the next few weeks, police received more calls from concerned neighbors, who complained about public drug use, fights breaking out and needles in their yards.

According to a LBPost.com article, on June 30, police were surveilling the home when they saw 51-year-old Ryan Munson leave the house in a black SUV. Munson committed several minor traffic violations and was pulled over. On parole for vehicle theft, Munson told police that he was delivering $25 worth of fentanyl to a woman waiting at a restaurant.

Munson stated he was a “runner” delivering fentanyl for his supplier, Joseph Navetta, who police said has several drug-related cases in Oklahoma. Court records show that Navetta was previously arrested in October after police searched his home in the 3100 block of Bellflower Boulevard and found over 50 grams of methamphetamine, 30 grams of fentanyl, scales, drug paraphernalia and packaging equipment.

Police obtained a search warrant for both homes less than a mile apart. At the 3300 block of San Anseline Avenue, officers seized nine guns, including a 5.56 caliber AR-15 rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun, and arrested Burhmann. Police said narcotics and paraphernalia were also discovered. During the search of Navetta’s Bellflower Boulevard address, officers seized several ounces of narcotics, including fentanyl.

None of this activity came as a surprise to one-time Long Beach City Councilman Jerry Shulz, a retired L.A. Sheriff deputy who regularly patrols the area in the late night and early morning hours. “I have been hearing of complaints against that residence since I moved here in 2002.”

Shulz said a well-known Long Beach business woman who lives across the street on San Anseline “told me that that has been a problem for 40 years, especially since the parents died and the two sons now own it. The problem seems to be that they have ‘friends’ living or staying there, much like a Motel 6. I have heard about reported drug dealing, thieves, etc.

“There seems to be two types of complaints. One is about the condition of the property itself. There has been a blue, plastic tarp on the leaking roof for many years. The property is a mess with overgrown weeds, debris, junk, etc. The front yard is a mess as well. People sleep in cars there, on the porch, in the garage, back yard, etc. The place needs a paint job. It is in violation of many provisions of the Property Maintenance Code for the City of Long Beach but they have not enforced it.

“The other type of complaint is about drugs and seedy characters hanging out there. Sometimes they are out by the street all night long making noise or fixing old, junk cars in the street. There have been several fights there as well.

“This place is known to the community as the ‘Den of Thieves #1’. The other home that the police raided last week in the 3100 block of Bellflower is known as ‘Den of Thieves #2’. Both are linked and the same people are frequently seen at both locations.”

Until recently, a red and blue ambulance-like vehicle marked “medic unit” has been spotted parked in the area and in front of the San Anseline residence as well on other busy streets including Woodruff Avenue. Attempts to reach Burhmann at several listed phone numbers were unsuccessful as the numbers were no longer working.

A nearby resident said, “It’s a quiet neighborhood and the only problem is Steve and his grifters coming and going. We are not happy about the weapons he had and worry about his getting more.” In the recent raid, she counted nine guns brought out by police. She said “there have always been drugs” and “two or three” others live there that are “always stoned.” Those who come and go are generally male. As a result of these concerns, “the neighbors have gathered together,” more than likely keeping an eye on the situation, though there are no known plans to attempt any changes.

I just would like to state some TRUE facts pertaining to the Den of Thieves #1&2 that’s alleged by Jerry Schultz and an undisclosed LB Business woman living on San Anseline . I have NO CLUE who
Ryan Munson or Steve Burhmann are. I would have to make the common sense reasonable conclusion that THEY are “Friends “ Criminal Associates or as I think of Joseph NAVETTA a Danger to anyone he knows especially if he related by blood which is what unfortunately I found out the hardest way of all when I almost lost my life by trusting a person supposed to be my brother deliberately gave me a lethal dose of Fentanyl WHICH he led me to believe was NOT anything but some low grade meth and despite ignoring his girlfriend CLEARLY stating WHY don’t do this he’s done nothing to you it will KILL him then she LEFT refusing to be there when it happened NOW TAKE INTO MIND I had to move out of MY HOME I BOUGHT over 30 years ago from my father 2years earlier because of Joseph NAVETTA his drug dealing activities people at my MOTHERS HOME etc after I PLEADED w my sister Josie Palma as well as asking my Aunt to try to intervene on my behalf to plead maje Joseph leave STOP SOMETHING I could NOT live in my own home I PURCHASED while Joe lived FREE in MY MOTHERS w all his drug friends etc…and was told well then find some where else . So I relocated to my then girlfriend now wife’s house in Lake Elsinore and avoided any contact with Josie Palma or Joe NAVETTA if at all possible going only to my aunts hoping to see my Mother who my sister moved into HER LAKEWOOD home living Joe open season to destroy what hadn’t been destroyed already by Josie’s son when he and his gf lived there RENT FREE growing pot etc constant fighting pirating electric and other utilities from
Me next door…until Joseph paroled from Oklahoma after MULTIPLE DRUG CONVICTIONS AND PRISON TERMS FOR DEALING NARCOTICS. My sister is the supposed Conservator of the Estate which she has looted and dismantled what my Father built ALL to HER PERSONAL GAIN and she ALLOWS JOSEPH to live there RENT FREE UTILITIES FREE ALL THE DRUGS DEALING PEOPLE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES beyond your imagination as long as he leaves her alone she doesn’t care NOT what I as aHOME OWNER next door had to endure until I finally had to just SELL MY HOME AFTER 30+ years of OWNERSHIP I WORKED AND PAID FOR MYSELF NEVER WELFARE DRUG ILLEGAL ACTIVITY NO MCDONNELL DOUGLAS TEAMSTERS UNION retired before that Knutson Dairy Various Security Companies I was a Certified Armed Guard my life long friends SEVERAL LBPD LAPD OCSD etc …and STILL I contacted LBPD LASD spoke with other neighbors BEGGED anything PLEASE be done I can’t even I’ve in MY HOME. And THAT has been going on for over the past 4 years it only took Joseph MAYBE 3-4 months of being out before he was completely out of control DEALING FENTANYL like it was Ice Cream at Rite AIDS and NO ONE DOING ANYTHING. LBPD would raid him and then OR him WTH???? My supposed sister ignoring it as well as my cousin Josie my Aunt my other Cousibs EVEN AFTER HE DELIBERATELY OVERDOSED ME and LIED /manipulated me into trusting him to do so and AGAIN I had moved out if my home over a year prior just to get away from him. NOW FINALLY OCTOBER 11th Joseph was sentenced to LA COUNTY jail I believe until September 2024 WHICH IS NOTHING….what in God’s name is a person to do ? WHY HASNT LONG BEACH CITY ATTORNEY SEIZED 3130 Bellflower as a KNOWN DRUG HOUSE WHICH IT WAS NO QUESTION so that Joseph can NOT move back in NOR CAN HE OR JOSIE PALMA PROFIT off the property THEY DESTROYED and TOOK AWAY from my Mother SHE DID NOT WANT TO MOVE IN WITH MY SISTER but that’s another tragic story God Bless My Mom and God willing Josie Palma will be held MORE ACCOUNTABLE for all she has looted stolen lied and manipulated away from my Mother and the Estate of not only my mothers home but 2 rental properties that Josie gave 1 to her son and the other to her nephew by marriage AND NOW MY MOTHER PAYS JOSIE RENT UNBELIEVABLE but God DOES see all. THAT is true. I’m just hoping to get other people asking common sense questions and WHY the City of Long Beach has FAILED to protect HOME OWNERS TAX PAYERS and ALLOW this to continue SO LONG and has yet to SEIZE 3130 Bellflower Blvd. ONCE AND FOR ALL as it is LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO DO since it is a KNOWN DRUG HOUSE and will be until the day Joseph NAVETTA Jr. and Josie Palma die. NOT MY MOTHER NOT ME NOT ANY OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS BUT THOSE 2 who will continue to destroy the neighborhood with TOTAL DISRESPECT DISREGARD and NOT CARE because the City of LING Beach isn’t seeking ANY LEGAL ACTION AGAINST JOSIE AS THE EXECUTIVE OF THe ESTATE PERMITTING THIS ILLEGAL DRUG TRADE ETC SHE IS COMPLETELY AWARE she should NOT be in charge of my Mother my Mothers finances or the Estate well there is no estate now she’s stolen all the houses . As I said she charges my mother rent fir the room at her house . God bless us all. Please forgive the rant but I’m sick and tired of being lumped into Joseph’s activities circle of associates etc when I LITERALLY MOVED OUT OVER 3 years ago of MY HOME I PURCHASED MYSELF which I had to finally sell in February of this year. I couldn’t continue. I honestly thought I’d die at my house 3124 Bellflower. I owned it over 30+ years Joseph NEVER lived there but my house got ALOT of blame. Josie NEVER lived there nor did her son etc…but She certainly tried stealing it from me but God stopped that I brought and paid LEGALLY for my home and now it’s gone. So I’m asking WHY ISNT THE CITY OF LONG BEACH SEIZING 3130 Bellflower Blvd to STOP the drug dealing and STOP JOSIE PALMA JOSEPH NAVETTA FROM PROFITABILITY off Illegal I’ll Gotten Deeds they’ve done to my Mother and the home my father built her NEVER imaging what those 2 greedy falsely self entitled Liars could do so publicly with no shame or conscious concern for the neighbors around that house which I unfortunately was . It’s seizable under CALIFORNIA PENAL HEALTH & SAFETY CODE 11366 HS which it CLEARLY IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS NOT ONLY MEETS BUT SURPASSES THE CRITERIA FOR THE BURDEN OF PROOF THE CITY OF LONG BEACH NEEDS TO MEET UNDER THE LAW THE HOUSE TO BE SEIZED UNDER CALIFORNIA’s ASSET FORFEITURE LAWS. I know I PERSONALLY am contacting city council members, the City Attorney, the Nuisance Abetment Officer ANYONE EVERYONE POSSIBLE in a position of authority to ensure this is DONE and ENDS THIS GONE ON FAR TO LONG CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT NUISANCE that WAS THE SOLE PURPOSE I sold my beloved home I worked, paid tax’s just like all the other home owners surrounding that property have are and will continue to do so PROTECT THE NEIGHBORHOOD HOMEOWNERS FROM JOSIE PALMA AND JOSEPH NAVETTA. I think my Father would be proud of me for fighting to end this torture my Mother has been enduring. She has NOT my house I have NO HOME no more broke my heart literally into a million pieces and I sold a year after she had already surrendered to the hopeless of it all. LOOK UP THE HEALTH AND SAFETY CODES HOME OWNERS the City of Long Beach has seized homes for FAR LESS trouble danger and for ALOT less time than what has happened at 3130 Bellflower. And I hope this FINALLY starts to OOEN some of the neighbors minds so they REALIZE I am NOT a participant I unfortunately was victimized so badly I sought restraining orders etc all to NO AVAIL… HOLD LONG BEACH CITY ACCOUNTABLE AS WELL AS PUTTING AN END TO JOSEPH NAVETTA AND JOSIE PALMA’s profitability on OUR HARD EARNED PROPERTIES. Thank you.
