A Toast to the Bootlegger Broads

John Tosdal

They say from crisis comes opportunity. Enter the Bootlegger Broads. The gals share their thoughts on cocktails, their niche in the world of adult beverages to your front door while operating during a pandemic.

Who are the Bootlegger Broads and what’s your background?

Bootlegger Broads are just a couple of broads from Long Beach who came about when COVID forced our workplace to close. We have both bartended and served in restaurants for years and wanted to keep doing just that.

What was the inspiration to start your business?

We saw COVID coming between friends and families and wanted a way to keep people in touch through fun “cocktail grams” and also wanted to give our neighbors an opportunity to order a hand-crafted, top shelf drink for themselves! We realized that everyone could use a drink right now.

Describe how Bootlegger Broads operates?

We make our cocktails fresh. We make every ingredient; from squeezing fresh lemons to making our own pumpkin Bailey’s. We deliver these handmade drinks anywhere from South Orange County to Pasadena.

Who are your primary customers?

Our customers are all over the place! We deliver to a lot of nurses and teachers, or parents navigating distance learning, and sometimes offices or businesses who want to send their employees a surprise or Zoom happy hour invite.

What are your most popular items?

We just came out with a new Fall-O-Ween menu that has been a huge hit. The most popular right now are our keto blackberry jalapeno margarita and our Cold Witch’s Brew-a cold brew martini swirling with gold glitter and a side of homemade dairy-free pumpkin Bailey’s.

Bootlegger Broads is a fascinating company name. How did that come about?

We were inspired by the time we are living in right now. We started in March when everything had just closed and Long Beach felt like a ghost town. We thought of ourselves as bootleggers!

How do you assure product safety with your delivered cocktails?

We are all about keeping ourselves and our customers safe. We wear gloves and masks, wipe all products down with alcohol before they are distributed, and our drives take the same precautions. We have always used a “no-contact” drop off policy.

What’s the best way to contact you and to place orders?

Instagram! @bootleggerbroads

And for those that don’t use social media, bootleggerbroads@gmail.com.

What’s the next step for Bootlegger Broads?

We hope the connections we have made through our services will morph into things like event bartending where we will not only bartend for your parties, but we will also make a signature drink tailored to each event. We hope to be around for a long time.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been said to accelerate inevitable changes. Once restaurants and bars have reopened, do you see your business continuing to grow?

Absolutely. Though bars and restaurants have already started opening, we see that folks are still wary and still would rather enjoy a cocktail brought to them in their own homes than deal with the fuss and uncertainty of being in a crowded place.

Describe the most bizarre order you’ve handled?

Not exactly strange, but a principal of a school wanted to send all her teachers a drink and the addresses went all the way from Burbank, to Redondo Beach, to Corona and San Clemente! Plus 20 others locally. So, we were definitely rushing that day!
