Tom Clark Passes

Former 4th District Councilmember and Long Beach Mayor Tom Clark passed away Wednesday at the age of 93. He was the longest serving member of the council from 1965 to 1996 and was elected mayor by his council colleagues three times before the position became fulltime.

Clark was instrumental in the development of El Dorado Park, the Civic Center, Grand Prix and Queen Mary; he was aboard in 1967 when it arrived in Long Beach.

(Yesterday it was announced that the ship’s operations were being suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.)

In 1998 he was voted onto the board of trustees for Long Beach City College and held that position until 2014.

Clark maintained an optometry practice on Abbeyfield Street before retiring in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Johnson Florea, whom he married in 2015. Clark was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois, after more than 50 years of marriage with three surviving children.

Memorial services are pending.
