TRAFFIC FATALITY - ATLANTIC AVE AND 29TH ST

LBPD Media Relations Detail
On Dec. 20 at 8:09 p.m., officers were dispatched to Atlantic Avenue and Spring Street regarding a traffic collision between an automobile and a pedestrian in a wheelchair, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Once officers arrived on scene they located a male adult pedestrian down in northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue north of 29th Street. The pedestrian was unconscious and not breathing. Officers began lifesaving measures on the pedestrian until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. The pedestrian's damaged wheelchair was nearby in the roadway.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the pedestrian to a local area hospital where he died from his injuries. The pedestrian's identity will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroners Office.

During the investigation officers also contacted a 21-year-old resident of Long Beach. He was identified as the driver of a 2005 Ford Escape, involved in the collision. The collision occurred when the pedestrian in the wheelchair attempted to cross Atlantic Avenue mid-block and outside of a marked crosswalk.

The driver of the Ford Escape stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Detectives do not believe the driver of the vehicle was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call Detective Sirilo Garcia of the Long Beach Police Department’s Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7355.
