The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced a significant drop in Part 1 (violent & property) crimes for 2017. Total Part 1 crime was down 7.9 percent from 2016.
Player of the Week: Gabe Levin, Men’s Basketball – Senior Gabe Levin scored a career-high 29 points against CSUN, and again led the team with 18 points at UC Riverside as the Beach went 2-0 on the week. Levin averaged 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game over the two games.
Player of the Week: TJ DeFalco, Men’s Volleyball – TJ DeFalco led No. 2 LBSU to a 4-0 start to the season and was named to the UCSB ASICS All-Tournament Team after finishing the week averaging 3.31 kills per set.
On Friday, Jan. 5, at 12:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Holiday Inn at Lakewood Boulevard and Willow Street regarding a person with a gun call, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.
ST. MARY MEDICAL CENTER welcomed the first baby of the New Year on Jan. 1 to Long Beach residents, Christina Yem (mother) and Rodtanna Onn (father). Baby girl, Ava Yem, was delivered by Dr. Michael Cogan at 12:35 a.m. weighing 9 pounds 14 ounces and 20 inches long.
The Long Beach City Council is scheduled to vote Jan. 16 on whether to approve a proposal that would involve consolidating oil drilling operations in the Los Cerritos Wetlands to nearby sites and restoring the degraded marsh back to its natural habitat.
