Several weeks ago, Long Beach resident Fred got a call on his land line from a young male. “Hi grandpa,” he said. Fred knew most grandparents who don’t keep in constant touch with their out-of-town grandchildren might well take for granted this was the voice of their grandson. “How are you?”
The legend is that Dr. Francis Townsend had just been let go as an assistant medical examiner with the city of Long Beach when one day in 1933 while he was shaving, he looked outside the window and saw elderly women rummaging for food in the trash cans in the alley.
The United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) awarded Long Beach Airport (LGB) a $15.3 million grant as part of the Airport Improvement Program. The funds will go toward infrastructure improvements to LGB’s busiest Runway 7R-25L.

Two baby Black-Necked Stilts hatched in late June in the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Shorebird Sanctuary exhibit. Gigi, their mother, has lived in this exhibit since it opened in 2002, but this year was the first that she laid eggs and hatched chicks.
