Adler Enjoys Giving Back to the Community

Sydni Ingram

Zachary “Zach” Adler is an 18-year-old newspaper carrier for the Beachcomber that has an interest in multiple things, such as engineering and learning Spanish. He found out about this job opportunity through the Beachcomber newspaper when he was 11 years old and luckily there was a spot open for his specific neighborhood.

He was inspired by his mother to become a newspaper carrier since his mother used to be one, “It was cool to have that connection,” Zach said. He also likes being a part of the local community and conversing with his neighbors all while traveling on his bike.

His favorite part of the job is when he finishes wrapping the papers under an hour, “Once I get into the groove with the TV on and I’m sitting in the living room, it’s pretty fun seeing a mountain of papers arise before you.” The only downside for him is when he delivers on a hot day, especially in the summer.

Outside of his job being a carrier, Zach is a boy scout, this allows him to do a lot of hiking, camping and community service. He also is a part of a robotics team where he builds robots and competes against other teams. On top of that, he runs cross country and recently started sailing during the winter.

As for school, he attends the California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS). At the moment his favorite subject is Spanish, “I really love immersing myself in a language and also being able to talk to other people in a way that I really haven’t done for most of my life, especially with native speakers, it’s really fun.” This is something he wants to keep pursuing and learning outside of school.

After high school, Zach wants to go to school for engineering, either as a mechanical or software engineer, “I think it’s really fascinating how we can build a problem and we can imagine and come up with different solutions to that problem and implement it all while building.”

His current goals for himself amidst this quarantine are staying healthy and working out. Once things get better he plans to get his Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot license and travel as much as he can.
