The inauguration of Donald J. Trump on Monday was predictably filled with the kind of entertainment that he has been famous for in past decades, starting with The Apprentice TV show. The signing of executive orders that followed were a combination of sense and nonsense.

Leading the list of common sense items were actions to stop the illegal entry into the United States by anyone. He also declared that only male and female were the only acceptable genders to be used for government purposes. Thankfully, in the future, we will not be paying for anyone who wants us to pay for their transgender surgery.

On the nonsense side was the pardoning of everyone participating in the Jan. 6 rioting at the U.S. Capitol, including those involved with injuring police officers. That is what Operation Desert Storm General Norman Schwartzkopf would have called “bovine scatology.” The last thing that the president of the United States should do is to piss off the 1,269,000 sworn law enforcement officers nationwide whose job, in part, it is to protect the president.

Online we are asking “Do you agree or disagree with President Trump’s pardon of the participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack?” Go to www.beachcomber.news to participate and email comments to letters@beachcomber.news.

Trump is going after the use of wind turbines on land and sea for generating electricity. The Port of Long Beach is actively planning on this activity as part of their Green Port initiative. See the State of the Port story on page 7 of this issue.

In Trump’s “Protecting the American People Against Invasion” executive order, Long Beach stands to lose out on hundreds of millions in current and future federal funds because of its sanctuary city status.

We recently received a fun batch of quotes attributed to  American stand-up comedian and actor Steven Wright:

  • I’d kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Borrow money from pessimists – they don’t expect it back.
  • Half the people you know are below average.
  • 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.
  • 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
  • A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
  • If you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain.
