Beachcombing – Steve Downing
Stephen Downing was extraordinary. His presence in Long Beach and in the pages of the Beachcomber left a mark far deeper than the years between his birth and his passing last week. His legacy is not captured by dates alone, but by the extraordinary dash (1938 — 2025) that he filled with purpose, principle, and unwavering commitment to truth.
Stephen was more than a reporter and columnist — he was a voice for accountability, transparency, and justice. His words challenged institutions, championed the public’s right to know, and strengthened the very fabric of our community.
With every article he wrote, he reminded us that journalism, at its best, is an act of service. His recent stories in the Nov. 14 edition about the city’s illegal sales tax hike and the Belmont Shore murder demonstrate his expertise and investigative rigor.
His ten-plus years of writing for the Beachcomber was distinguished not only by professional excellence but by the integrity behind it. He pursued stories that mattered, asked the questions that others hesitated to ask, and brought clarity to issues that needed light. He had the unique ability to get the facts behind local law enforcement issues because he once wore the badge and was trusted with confidential information.
Linda Ellis wrote a 1996 poem about “The Dash Between” that distinguishes all of us from the time we are born and die. Stephen’s dash was defined by more than ink and headlines. It reflected a man deeply committed to his family, his friends, and to the ideals he believed in. His presence inspired others to stand a little taller, speak a little louder, and stay rooted in principle when it mattered most.
Before devoting much time to the Long Beach community, Stephen rose to the rank of deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. His knowledge of law enforcement led to involvement with several acclaimed TV series and made-for-television movies as a screenwriter and producer. Using pseudonyms to avoid attention at the LAPD, he wrote more than 500 hours of television script, bringing authenticity to each production.
As we reflect on Stephen’s life, we recognize the enduring legacy he leaves behind. His dash teaches us that our time is best measured not by years, but by courage, by compassion, and by the difference we make in the lives of others.
Though he is no longer with us, Stephen’s words remain – etched in print, in memory, and in the generations of readers who saw the world more clearly because of him. His dash continues forward in the impact he made, and in the lives he touched.
