Water Commissioners to Vote on Budget and Rates

The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners will vote on two separate resolutions regarding their Fiscal Year 2017-18 proposed budget and rates for Long Beach Water on Thursday, June 15. The regular board meeting will be held at 9 a.m. at the LBWD Administration Building at 1800 E. Wardlow Road.

The rate resolution proposes a four percent water rate increase and a two percent sewer rate increase to meet continuing increases in the cost of delivering water and sewer services safely and reliably to our community. The average combined water and sewer bill for a typical single family household will increase by $1.84 per month. Typical usage is based on 10 billing units for water and 10 billing units for sewer per month. The new rates will go into effect October 1.

The adoption of the proposed budget and rates for FY 2017-18 is subject to a Proposition 218 public hearing and adoption by the City Council. A notice of the Proposition 218 public hearing will be mailed to all LBWD customers of record.

The full agenda packet can be found at lbwater.org/meeting-times-location-agendas after 12 noon on Friday, June 9.

Chavez Family Launches Scholarship Program

This year four deserving seniors in the PACE Program at Long Beach Poly High School were awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarship funding as part of the first annual Chavez Family Scholars Program. For the inaugural class of scholarship recipients, The Chavez Family Scholars Program sought to identify students who demonstrated academic excellence, leadership ability, and community service. Not only did the four winners meet the requirements, but they also demonstrated compassion, integrity and perseverance.

The four recipients were Veronica Santana, Derek Matos, Ashley Huendo, and Jessica Diaz. Santana will be attending Harvard University. Matos, Huendo and Diaz will attend UCLA in the fall. Beyond high GPAs and test scores, these students showed a degree of leadership, courage, and maturity that deserves to be recognized and rewarded.

The Chavez Family Scholars Program was created to invest in Long Beach’s best and brightest students. “I wanted to create a legacy of giving back to an institution that has been at the forefront of academic excellence in Long Beach for 42 years,” commented James Chavez, the founder of the scholarship program.
