Car Show Precedes AGPLB

Actor and car enthusiast Sung Kang makes his way to the top of the Long Beach Aquarium parking structure in a Toyota AE86 while greeting a fan.

Before the main festivities begin next weekend on April 17- 19, Type S Night Lights rolled into town leading the way with a vibrant car show April 9.

Type S Night Lights is a live showcase held at the Long Beach Aquarium that features popular cars and highlights Type S products.

It’s officially promoted as a pre‑meet for Formula DRIFTs Streets of Long Beach round, with Formula Drift cars parading from the paddock into the garage show and back – a separate event from the Acura Grand Prix Long Beach (AGPLB).

The event is hosted by car photographer Larry Chen and actor Sung Kang, famously known for being on the Fast & Furious movie franchise.

Long Beach resident Alex Leyva made it a mission to get a glimpse of one of the actors of his favorite movie, Fast & Furious.

“I mean, I knew it was going to be a car show tonight but to see the whole parking structure packed and when Sung Kang got here, the people and especially the cars went crazy,” said Leyva.

Although it is a separate event to the AGPLB, it does utilize the same downtown venue footprint before the main festivities begin next weekend.

Originally started at the Fujiwara Tofu Cafe in El Monte back in 2022, the event has grown to incorporate more fans and cars causing it to move to the Long Beach Aquarium.

Type S is an automotive accessory company that specializes in dash cams, back up cameras, LED lighting kits, and other add-ons popular in the car culture community.

The Costa Mesa based company is the one of the official partners of Formula Drift – one of the many events included in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach lineup coming up April 17-19.
