Chargers Looking for First Win in the 2024 Football Season
The Los Angeles Chargers are set to open the 2024 preseason without starting quarterback Justin Herbert, his plantar fascia injury has kept him out of the recent practices.
The plan is to keep him out until the start of the regular season. Easton Stick has been filling in for Herbert in the meantime, taking all first-team reps.
The Chargers have hosted the Seattle Seahawks and, respective neighbors, Los Angeles Rams for the past two weekends but have yet to capitalize on a win through the preseason.
The Harbaugh-led crew are prepared to show the excitement of a new staff and team by ending the preseason with a win as they travel to Dallas to take on the Cowboys.
“I think this year, the team is more detailed and every guy is wanting to win,” said linebacker Daiyan Henley. “There’s a different type of energy, last was unacceptable and I think that was the win total alone was unacceptable. This year we want more as a team … it’s Harbaugh bringing energy.”
Despite the offense taking a step back because of the Herbert injury, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has confidence in the defense and lists the energy and physicality as main proponents going into week one of the preseason.
Specifically noted undrafted rookie linebacker Tre’mon Morris-Brash and safety Alohi Gilman as improving players that are ready to make the leap to starter.
“I think there’s always surprises, there’ll be an undrafted rookie that makes a bunch of plays that we’ll talk about,” said Minter. “I’m excited to see who pops off. One guys I’m really excited about is Tre’mon, he’s rushed well in practice, plays with a ton of energy. I’m excited to see how it translates to the game.”
The Chargers have shown a defensive fortitude so far in the preseason with good depth of young talent and veteran players, leaving opponents to under 16 points and registering an NFL-high 14 passes defended.
“Alohi (Gilman) is a tough, fast, instinctual safety, understands the game and I think he is going to have a huge impact on our defense,” said Minter about Gilman.
The team is ready to charge up and take the first win of the 2024 preseason against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. The game can be watched through local television broadcasts.
