Charter Amendments Pass

FORMER COUNCILWOMAN Rae Gabelich, People of Long Beach’s Juan Eric Ovalle and Carlos Ovalle, and community activist Robert Fox discuss the four Long Beach charter amendment proposals that passed in Tuesday’s election along with a separate measure to protect hotel workers. While the outcome was not what they desired, they were said to be content with the “bang they got for their bucks by enlightening many of the constituents and garnering 44 percent of the vote.” In other races Long Beach resident and LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell was narrowly defeated by retired LASD Lt. Alex Villanueva, Congressman Alan Lowenthal was re-elected over challenger John Briscoe, Janet Nguyen was defeated by Tom Umberg for State Senate and Patrick O’Donnell was re-elected to the State Assembly over Mimi Robson.
