City Prosecutor Q&A

Long Beach City Prosecutor Doug Haubert is the guest on the next edition of Straight Talk. He joins host Art Levine to discuss the work of his office and the advantages of having a locally elected city prosecutor. Hauber describes some of the unique programs of his office, including the widely recognized and effective PATH (Promising Adults Tomorrow’s Hope) Program for diverting first time offenders away from the criminal justice system.

This Straight Talk show will air in Long Beach/Signal Hill on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on LBTV Channel 3 and Frontier FiOS 21. It also airs Saturday and Sunday in Long Beach and 70 surrounding cities at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Charter Channel 188. The show will be repeated the following weekend at the same times. QuakeSmart Workshop

In continuing the efforts that began at the National Earthquake Conference held locally last year and to prepare small and large businesses for catastrophic earthquakes and other disasters as part of the Los Angeles County’s Prepareathon Program, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes and the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers the 2017 QuakeSmart workshop at Long Beach City College, 4901 E. Carson St., Room T1200 on Tuesday, May 16, from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The workshop will provide businesses and organizations, small or large, a tool kit to do the following: identify their hazards and risks by learning about business continuity, disaster response and the cost benefits of preparing for earthquakes and other business interruptions; develop a plan to identify preparedness and mitigation actions needed to ensure the safety of their employees and customers, as well as conduct assessments and begin to plan for retrofit projects; and take action to learn how to perform disaster preparedness and mitigation activities.

Also, the Long Beach QuakeSmart workshop will feature an expo area where live earthquake preparedness and mitigation demonstrations with vendors and other organizations will take place. Pride Festival

Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride announced that their 34th Annual Festival and Parade event will be held on May 20 and 21, at Marina Green Park.

This year Long Beach Pride will feature headliners on each of several stages. “We truly want to provide an environment for the community to come together and celebrate our eclectic blend of cultures, as well as cultivate inclusiveness at every level,” said Denise Newman, president of Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Pride.

Police Awards

The 49th Annual Long Beach Police Awards Ceremony is set for Thursday, June 8, at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center on the campus of California State University, Long Beach A joint effort of the Long Beach Police Department and the Long Beach Police Foundation (LBPF), this event is designed to be family-friendly and honors police department employees and citizens who have distinguished themselves during the past year by their brave or unselfish acts of heroism, and their dedication to community safety.
