Fire Recruit Class Graduates

The Long Beach Fire Department  announced that the Basic Fire Recruit Academy Class 2017 A/B, who began the 14-week Fire Academy training on January 20, is graduating on Saturday, May 27. The ceremony will be held at the Long Beach Fire Regional Training Center, 2249 Argonne Ave., from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include various demonstrations of the graduating class’ newly acquired skills as well as static displays of antique and modern fire department apparatuses.

The ceremony will honor 39 qualified recruits who will enter the ranks of firefighters for the Long Beach Fire Department.

Upon graduation, Class 2017 A/B will have completed months of extensive classroom and manipulative training through a rigorous regime that included: fire ground operations, ladder evolutions, hose lays, auto extrication, rescue systems, firefighting, truck company operations and ventilation practices. All graduates have also been successfully certified as Emergency Medical Technicians through the National Registry. This recruit class is very unique in that this academy consisted of two full classes that ran concurrently to meet the needs of the department.

Class 2017 A/B is a reflection of the diverse Long Beach community. They come to the city with various professional backgrounds, life experiences, and cultural heritages, as the City of Long Beach is committed to fostering a highly competent and diverse workforce.

Lowenthal Q&A

U.S. Congressman Alan Lowenthal will be the guest on the next edition of Straight Talk. He joins host Art Levine to provide an update from Washington D.C. He discusses the threat from North Korea and the steps being taken to address the problem.

Lowenthal shares his views on healthcare reform, and analyzes the problems caused by gerrymandering. He also discusses his new role as co-chair of the Congressional Port Caucus.

This Straight Talk show will air in Long Beach/Signal Hill on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on LBTV Channel 3 and Frontier FiOS 21. It also airs Saturday and Sunday in Long Beach and 70 surrounding cities at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Charter Channel 188. The show will be repeated the following weekend at the same times. Furry Friends Faire

Los Cerritos Neighborhood Association, Friends of Los Cerritos and Park Partners will collaborate to sponsor a free family event on Saturday, June 3, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event, Furry Friends Faire, will feature:

  • Pet-related demonstrations
  • Pet adoptions, licensing, microchipping
  • Training tips
  • Pet poetry contest for students of Los Cerritos Elementary Pet Parade for trophies, ribbons and prizes.

The event will take place at Los Cerritos Park located at the corner of Country Club Drive and West San Antonio near the tennis courts. Entry in the pet contests will require completed entry and liability waiver forms as well as a $5 donation. All proceeds will benefit the community.

Free Community Concert

The 6th Annual Uptown Jazz Festival will be held on Saturday, June 24, at Houghton Park. Headlining the event for 2017 is Ozomatli and DW3.

“The Uptown Jazz Festival is always a fun way to celebrate our community, listen to great music, and kick off the summer,” said Vice Mayor Richardson. “This year, I am thrilled to bring the high energy and renowned band Ozomatli and local favorite DW3 to Uptown. It’s going to be a great show that the entire family can enjoy!”

Hailing from Los Angeles, Ozomatli has found a way to represent the city and region’s eclectic culture through music that appeals to the local community and the world beyond. Their success is exemplified in an impressive variety of genres, from classic to modern Latino, urban, hip-hop and other world styles. DW3 is Southern California’s premiere R&B, funk, and contemporary urban jazz powerhouse. This will be the sixth year that the versatile ensemble has performed at the Uptown Jazz Festival.

The festival is free and open to the public. From 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., the community can come to the park and enjoy music, food trucks, vendor booths, a kids zone, and more. All are encouraged to bring blankets and low lawn chairs. No canopies will be allowed.

‘Mary Poppins’ Flies In

Musical Theatre West brings a “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” production of Mary Poppins to the Carpenter Performing Arts Center July 7-23. Practically perfect in every way, it’s a high flying fun filled adventure for the young and young at heart.

Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s production features the delectable Sherman Brothers score, including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” “Step in Time,” and “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” as well as new musical additions, by the Olivier winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

The eight children’s books by P.L. Travers, published from 1934 to 1988, first introduced us to the magical nanny who floated into the lives of the Bank’s family at 17 Cherry Tree Lane. The books were re-envisioned in the classic Walt Disney film in 1964 starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The stage version, reconceived for the stage by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey) premiered in London’s West End in 2004 where it earned nine Olivier Award nominations. The show made it Broadway in 2006 where it ran for seven years, earning seven Tony Award nominations.

Musical Theatre West’s production, under the direction and choreography by Daniel Pelzig, promises to be a spectacle, with lavish staging and fun-filled show-stopping dance numbers. Musical Director Ryan O’Connell leads a full orchestra.
