Movies in the Park
Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine’s “Movies in the Park” program sponsored by Signal Hill Petroleum will continue with screenings of the movie “The Lego Batman Movie” on:
- Monday, July 24, Drake Park, 951 Maine Ave.
- Wednesday, July 26, Somerset Park, 1500 E. Carson St.
- Friday, July 28, Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.
Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.
The movie will begin at dusk, about 8 p.m., but moviegoers are encouraged to come early with a picnic style dinner and let the kids enjoy moon bounces and fun in the park.
This is the twelfth year in a row that Signal Hill Petroleum in cooperation with Partners of Parks has sponsored the popular outdoor movie series, which attracts thousands of people young and old each summer for free evenings of fun in their local park. The “Movie in the Park” season runs through August 23.
Cowboy vs Samurai
The Long Beach Playhouse presents Cowboy versus Samurai in its Studio Theatre from July 22 through Aug. 19. It’s the story of an Asian American High School English teacher, his two friends, one who is also Asian American and one a “cowboy” and a beautiful Asian American colleague with a preference for dating white guys. Will the English teacher use his literary talent to help the cowboy or to help himself?
“Come and see the show,” said Madison Mooney, Playhouse executive director. “It’s a great cast, a wonderful director and a classic story told in a whole new way. The audience will very glad they came to see it.”

Long Beach Playhouse is located at 5021 E. Anaheim St., right across from the Long Beach Recreation Golf Course. The Playhouse is community-supported theatre with programs and events that cut across age, gender, ethnic, and cultural boundaries.
Summer of Music
The Long Beach Municipal Band will continue its 108th season of with free outdoor summer concerts in Long Beach parks on July 25. The week’s theme will be “Cinemagic – The Music of John Williams.” John Williams is the most prolific composer of our time. The volume of his works for films and concert halls speak for themselves. Over 110 films scores, 15 orchestral works, and 12 television show themes – all in the last 40 years! To date, John Williams has received over 50 Grammy awards. Conductor Curtis has selected a representative group of compositions for your enjoyment in honor of this great American music icon. Vocalist Julie Ragins will close the show.
The Long Beach Municipal Band is conducted by Larry Curtis, now in his 25th year as conductor. The Long Beach Municipal Band is the longest running, municipal band in the country.

The Long Beach Municipal Band Summer Concert Season is part of “100 Days of Summer,” a partnership with Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine and the Long Beach Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to encourage residents to “stay and play” in Long Beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The website, www.100daysofsummer.org has hundreds of ideas for recreational activities that do not cost a lot of money or require traveling far.
Silent Sky
International City Theatre presents “Silent Sky,” – a celestial romance and true story of discovery, this riveting new play explores the life and career of Henrietta Swan Leavitt (1868-1921) as she fearlessly asserts herself in the male-dominated world of early astronomy. Crawfish Festival
Rainbow Lagoon Park at 400-403 Shoreline Dr. will host the event July 28-30, on Friday, 5-10 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday noon to 10 p.m. Info: www.LongBeachCrawfishFestival.com.
Embroiderers
The Long Beach Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, Inc. will meet on Friday, July 28, at 11 a.m. with Melinda Sherbring concluding an Elizabethan embroidery project teaching the detached buttonhole to create three-dimensional flowers.
Social hour begins at 10:30 a.m. in Building T1309 of Long Beach City College, 4901 E. Carson St. Guests are welcome.
Charity Golf
New Hope Grief Support Community announces its 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament “In Memory of ____” where local professionals will enjoy a fun-filled, energetic opportunity to play golf, while honoring the memory of a personal loved one. Golfers contributions help ensure that no grieving family goes without the proper grief support. Each year, New Hope’s annual charity golf tournament becomes more successful allowing New Hope to expand its services to more grieving children and families in the community.
Tee Time is 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, at Recreation Park Golf Course. The 4-man scramble tournament includes 18 holes of golf, range balls, a putting contest, closest to the pin, longest drive, food and refreshments throughout the course and an Awards Dinner. Individual golf tickets are available for $150 and tournament sponsorship starts at $800 per foursome. There will also be a raffle and compelling silent auction to further support the fundraising efforts of New Hope.
