In observance of Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7, the City of Long Beach facilities and services listed below will adhere to the following schedules.

City Hall – City Hall offices and public services will be closed on Monday, including commercial services typically available at City Hall, such as the Permit Center (located on 2nd floor), Cashiering/Payment Processing, Utility Customer Service, Billing and Collections, and Parking Citations. The public is encouraged to continue taking advantage of the convenient online resources available on the city website, including building permit services and bill payment options.

Street Sweeping – There will be no scheduled street sweeping or enforcement of street sweeping violations on Monday. Street sweeping will resume its regular schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Parking Enforcement – Read your parking signs and meters: Citywide parking violations, including parking meters and pay stations, are enforced on holidays, unless the signs state “Except on Holidays.”

Refuse/Recycling – Refuse and recycling will be collected as scheduled Monday, Sept. 7 (except oversized items and special collections pick-ups conducted by the Clean Team).

Towing and Lien Sales – The Towing Operations and Vehicle Storage Facility (3111 E. Willow St., between Temple Avenue and Redondo Avenue) will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7. Normal business hours are:

• Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Closed Sunday and holidays.
• Vehicles and property are available for release outside of the hours listed above for an additional fee. More information can be found online.

Libraries – All Long Beach Public Library locations and services, including the main phone line, will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7. Libraries are not open Sundays per their normal schedule. Library patrons are encouraged to utilize the library’s vast collection of digital resources, including the library catalog, downloads and databases, available 24/7.

Furry Friends Fest

Berth 55 is hosting an event to bring together deserving parents with pets waiting on a forever home. Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) will provide adoption-ready dogs and cats eager to embrace their new families and fresh starts. LBACS is waiving the fees for all pets adopted during the event.

It will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Berth 55, 555 Pico Ave.

Sponsor Pet Supplies Plus will be there as well as Flea Treats (vitamin supplements for dogs and cats), Sucely D Sam Art (pet portraits), Woof Tails (pet grooming products), Garry Lemongrass (handmade pet clothes and human trinkets), Doggo Nice Day Dog Bakery (pup yogurt, too), along with KoaKai Shave Ice, Cafablanca Gourmet Coffee Bar, Pop-O-Licious N’ More Gourmet Popcorn and El Jefe Mexican Grill.

DJ Jack Pharaoh and the Red E Stage will be weaving musical magic, and the Badfish Roller Derby Gals will have an info/merch table and making the PA announcements throughout the day – on skates. For your memory books and photo albums, there will be two mascots, a dog named Happy, and a cat named Paws, waving in folks and posing for photo ops.

The day will include a basket raffle (one for dogs, one for cats) courtesy of Pet Supplies Plus, and two sets of theatre tickets for the Garage Theatre’s annual holiday melodrama. Two lucky winners will be chosen. For the chance to win, a donation of $5 is encouraged. All donations will go to LBACS.

LBACS serves between 5,000 and 6,000 lost and abandoned animals annually; animals who need medicine, food, bedding and care. When the community steps up, good stuff happens.

Dia de los Muertos Fest

The City of Long Beach and Office of First District Councilwoman Mary Zendejas present the 2026 Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, Festival, a free, family-friendly celebration of life and remembrance of loved ones who have died. This year’s celebration will take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 1 to 7 p.m., returning to its original location at Rainbow Lagoon (400 E. Shoreline Dr.)

The 2026 Día de los Muertos Festival will feature a variety of culturally rich performances, vendors, a resource fair and participation from various city departments and community partners, among other elements. Following last year’s Día de los Muertos Parade cancelation, the celebration returns to Long Beach in its original festival format, inviting the community to gather, honor loved ones and celebrate together in one central location.

The city is currently seeking organizations and vendors to participate in the festival. Nonprofit organizations and community groups interested in participating in the resource fair may submit an application now through Oct. 23. Entries should be culturally relevant. Food vendors and retailers are also encouraged to fill out a vendor interest form by Oct. 23 to participate in the festival.

This event is free and open to the public.

Día de los Muertos is deeply rooted in the traditions and cultures of the indigenous communities of Mexico and Latin America. As family, friends and neighbors continue those traditions in ways that are most meaningful in their lives, the city encourages the entire community to come together for this grand celebration at Rainbow Lagoon.

Annual Ranchos Walk

The City of Long Beach will host the Eighth Annual Ranchos Walk on Saturday, Sept. 26. The community is invited to join in this free, unique hike experience to explore an urban trail that links Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos. The 9.4-mile scenic route connects the highest points across Long Beach and Signal Hill, including Longview Point at Willow Springs Park, Reservoir Hill and Hilltop Park in Signal Hill.

The Annual Ranchos Walk welcomed over 500 participants in 2025. This year, the Ranchos Walk will focus on Long Beach’s history and the transformation of the city over time.

In addition to the full 9.4-mile urban hike, the walk will also feature shorter 3.5-mile and 6-mile route options. The Ranchos Walk will end at Rancho Los Alamitos, where participants can enjoy a fun afternoon of music, games and activities. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Led by the City’s Office of Climate Action and Sustainability, the Ranchos Walk is sponsored in part by the Port of Long Beach and supported by various city departments, including Health and Human Services and Public Works, as well as Walk Long Beach.

This year’s local history theme will educate walkers about the people, places and events that have shaped the city. Participants will be able to access a free audio tour using the IZI travel app which is available for download on Apple and Android devices. Participation in the event is free with registration. The goal of Ranchos Walk is to support active, fun and safe ways for walkers to explore neighborhoods and discover historic landmarks and vista points. Coinciding with California Pedestrian Safety Month, the event will also support the city’s Safe Streets Action Plan by providing free education and resources that work to prevent pedestrian and bicycle-related injuries.

This event is part of the city’s broader efforts to advance traffic safety. Over the past year, California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) and Port of Long Beach funds have helped the city expand traffic safety education and outreach, reaching more than 8,300 community members through school presentations, youth programs, community events and safety demonstrations.
