‘Flight’ at Playhouse

In 2005, Charlayne Woodward wrote a play entitled Flight and it is showing May 19 to June 16 at the Long Beach Playhouse.

Set in 1858, on a Georgia plantation, a young mother is suddenly sold, leaving behind her husband and their five-year-old son. Through a magical evening of storytelling, music and dance, their community shares the rich history that makes them so much more than slaves. Sharing this rich oral tradition not only comforts the father and son, but heals and strengthens the entire community; the audience has the privilege of going along for the ride.

“In 2005, Woodward wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times. In it she told about the stories she grew up hearing, the slave narratives she read and the folktales she researched that all went into writing this play,” said Executive Director, Madison Mooney. “She said she wanted to focus not only on the tales but also on the people who told them.”

Tickets – $14 to $24 –are available at www.lbplayhouse.org, or by calling (562) 494-1014, option 1.

Treasonweasels at Point

Stan DeWitt has curated the Grace First Concert Series, aka “Music at the Point,” for 13 years. Members of the church have asked him to take one of the dates himself, but so far he has resisted. “Last year, in a moment of weakness, I said yes,” Stan says. So, we are proud to bring Stan DeWitt and the Treasonweasels to the Grace First Sanctuary on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Stan is certainly a multi-faceted artist/musician. He feels at home, regardless whether it is in folk music, rock, classical (choral or orchestral), film music or music education. He was a member of the popular Southern California folk band the Woodbys, that enjoyed success in the early 1990s.

Stan will be joined by a crack bunch of L.A. musicians, collectively now known as the Treasonweasels: O’Brien on drums (Social Distortion, Agent Orange), Joe Lamanno on bass (The Association, the Turtles), Randy Volin on guitar (played with/opened for Joe Cocker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Money) and R. Scott Dibble (National People’s Gang, Baast.) They will be playing songs from all of Stan’s CDs, including several songs from Silver Bullet.

The concert will be held in the sanctuary of Grace First Presbyterian Church, on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. Grace First Presbyterian Church is located at 3955 Studebaker Rd. This concert is a free-will donation concert, with a suggested donation of $10.
