Pride and Prejudice

For its second show of the season, the Long Beach Playhouse presents an engaging new adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The show runs through Dec. 1.

In Jon Jory’s reworking, all of the wit and romance of the novel comes to life in a fast-paced, humorous and engaging production. Finding a husband is hardly Elizabeth Bennet’s most urgent priority, but it is her mother’s. And with Mrs. Bennet’s overzealous match-making it’s difficult to escape the subject. In a society where subtle snubs and deceit proliferate, is it possible for Elizabeth and Darcy to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to actually find real love?

Jon Jory’s light touch in adapting the show wins accolades from audiences and theaters. Without changing the plot or the point, he finds ways to move the plot along in a way that is easy on the modern ear, yet retains the charm of Austen’s story.

Tickets are $14 to $24 and are available at www.lbplayhouse.org, or by calling (562) 494-1014, option 1.

Performances are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. The box office is open Wednesday-Saturday from 3-8 p.m. and Sundays 1-2 p.m. on scheduled matinees.
