Clydesdales in Long Beach

The World Famous Budweiser Clydesdales are visiting 2nd Street in Long Beach on Saturday, March 30th. The event will run on 2nd Street from 2 to 4 p.m. The full team will start with a stop at Panama Joe’s, then a photo opportunity at Legends Sports Bar and then proceed to Dogz, Riley’s and Shannon’s, finishing at Quinn’s Pub.

The Budweiser Clydesdales made their first-ever appearance on April 7, 1933. A gift from August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch to their father in celebration of the repeal of Prohibition, the presentation of the original two six-horse hitches of champion Clydesdales moved father, sons and drivers to tears. The phrase “crying in your beer” was officially coined shortly thereafter.

They heralded a new era of prosperity for Anheuser-Busch, and a weary nation’s return to optimism. From their first appearance in 1933 to their enduring presence on the American landscape, the Clydesdales are more than the symbol of Budweiser beer; they are the living embodiment of America’s great industrial spirit.

Silent Sky at Playhouse

Lauren Gunderson’s play, Silent Sky, opening April 6 at the Long Beach Playhouse, is based on the true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. The play opens in 1900, when Leavitt is working in the Harvard Observatory in the “woman’s room.” These women “computers,” are tasked with measuring and cataloging stars. They work from photographic plates because women were not allowed to touch the telescopes. The astronomer for whom they work calculates projects in “girl hours,” has no time for the women’s probing theories and has no problem taking credit for their ideas.

Fortunately, Leavitt’s natural intelligence and curiosity won’t be constrained by norms of the day or the opinions of men. She spends her off hours studying the luminosity and pulsations of specific sets of stars. Her work resulted in a standardized measurement tool that’s still used today. She also theorized there were multiple galaxies, although that was met with scorn at the time, today we know it to be true. The play is about far more than the science of stars. It’s also a love story, and a life lived with hardships as well as endless optimism and joy. The author, Lauren Gunderson, described it as a fluid conversation of opposites: of Science and faith and of math and music. She describes Leavitt’s character as a woman who is intellectual, funny and romantic.

It’s a small cast, just five actors, four women and one man. Returning actors include Loren Bowen, Austin James, Brenda Kenworthy, and Holland Renton. Amber Hill is making her debut at LBP.

The show opens April 6 and runs through May 4. Tickets are available at www.lbplayhouse.org, or by calling (562) 494-1014, option 1.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. The box office is open Wednesday-Saturday from 3-8 p.m. and Sundays from 1-2 p.m. on scheduled matinees.
