Youth Chorus Registration

Registration for the Long Beach Youth Chorus 2019-20 season is now underway. To register, visit https://www.longbeachyouthchorus.org and click on “Registration,” where you will find registration documents and online payment options.

Placement auditions for new singers will be on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. with the first rehearsals set for Sunday, Sept. 8. For more information, contact Executive Director Stan DeWitt at (562) 972-3324 or acustatic@gmail.com.

The Long Beach Youth Chorus’ second season marked several milestones: first performance with the Long Beach Symphony; 100 percent growth in number of singers (15 to 30); first premieres; and a new fiscal sponsor. Now the chorus enters its third season seeking new horizons.

The Chorus’ opening chapter helped fulfill the organization’s mission: to develop the appreciation of choral music and musical talent among young people from diverse backgrounds in a mutually supportive environment.

Munatones on Straight Talk

Steve Munatones, CEO of Kaatsu Global, will be the guest in the next edition of Straight Talk. He will discuss this unique treatment for many ailments, and how “additional pressure” allows the body to heal itself.

This show airs nightly the week of Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. on LBTV Channel 3. It is also viewable on demand at www.straighttalktv.com.

Writers Club Meets

The California Writers Club of Long Beach is holding its free monthly meeting on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Ruth Bach Neighborhood Library, 4055 Bellflower Blvd.

The meeting is 3-5 p.m. with networking starting at 2:30. The club’s August speaker is Kim Dwinell who teaches animation at CSULB. Her presentation’s title is “Graphic Novels: How I Create Them and How They Fit in Today’s Publishing World.” Dwinell’s ©2017 novel, “Surfside Girls: The Secret of Danger Point” showcases the trendy genre. Kim Dwinell is the first graphic novelist presenter in the Long Beach branch’s 12-year history.

LBX’plorers Kids Club

Long Beach Exchange is kicking off its brand-new LBX’plorers Kids Club. This fun and interactive program led by Kids Club Coordinator, Stephanie Holdridge will begin on Saturday, Aug. 17, 11-noon and will be a place for little ones to enjoy an hour of books, music and crafts while making new and long-lasting friends.

The LBX’plorers Kids Club will happen once monthly until December with the first event focusing on all things aviation with a story about a little girl who yearns to fly on adventures and a craft that will guide campers through the step-by-step process of creating their very own airplane

Farm Dinner at the Ranch

The 3rd annual Farm Dinner at the Ranch is set for Saturday, Aug. 24, 5-9 p.m. at historic Rancho Los Alamitos.

Chef Paul Buchanan of Primal Alchemy will prepare the farm-to-table feast. It will be an evening of food, entertainment, good friends, and an opportunity to dine under the stars amid the corrals, barns and livestock at the rancho.

Guests will enter the site through the gardens, passing by the giant bamboo and the Native Garden, strolling through the Cactus Garden, past the Jacaranda Walk to a reception on the west lawn of the Ranch House.

Lively Americana music will set the mood for wine and craft beer tasting, the sampling of appetizers, wandering the gardens and perusing the cleverly staged silent auction.

It will be a unique dining experience and all proceeds from the evening will benefit Rancho Los Alamitos’ educational mission including school tours, public events and programs and site operations. Cost is $150 per person.

National Pet Day

Celebrate that special, furry someone in your life at Long Beach Exchange’s National Pet Day party + adoption event in collaboration with PetSmart. In honor of National Pet Day, which is August 26, PetSmart at LBX will host a variety of pet-themed festivities the weekend before on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include pet portraits, adoption groups, tasty pet-inspired treats, live music, and swag items from PetSmart.
