Friday, May 19

Pierpoint Landing. At 3:05 a.m., a group of six people, three male, three female told police they’d been in an argument with three men. That’s when the shooting took place, with one of the men opening fire, but hitting no one. After this possibly gang-related incident, the attackers fled on foot and were gone when officers arrived. So there.

East Seventh Street and Channel Drive. Joseph Gammoh, 63, a Westminster resident, was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on a sidewalk at 11:05 p.m. A 23-year-old Long Beach woman, who was driving a 2004 Honda Accord that struck the victim was cooperating with the investigation and no arrests were made. Impairment was not believed to have been a factor in this accident. The driver said she was trying to avoid a collision with a dark-colored vehicle and lost control of her car. “In doing so, it caused the driver of the Honda to make an evasive maneuver and lose control of her vehicle, which eventually drove up onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrian,” according to a police statement. The dark-colored vehicle kept going, according to police.

Saturday, May 20

Clark Avenue and Eagle Street. At 2:40 a.m., a 2000 Toyota Avalon with three occupants struck a utility pole. When police arrived, two passengers were inside the vehicle. One unconscious passenger was pulled out by officers, who administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Paramedics determined the victim, Justin Gregory McLean, 31, of Lakewood, deceased, while the injured passenger, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, who suffered a broken leg was transported to Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, a male 24-year-old resident of Lakewood was found walking a few blocks north of the accident. He was detained after a witness identified him as the driver and was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver was also found to be under the influence and faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, felony hit and run and felony driving under the influence.

Tuesday, May 23

4500 block of Coldbrook Ave., Lakewood. According to a posting on NextDoor, “At 5:40 a.m. this morning I chased a coyote off of my block. He went south on Coldbrook and stopped on the grass in front of the Lakewood High School library. Upon further investigation by my neighbors it turned out that it had eaten somebody’s cat.” The library was closed at the time.

Thursday, May 25

Gerald Desmond Bridge. At 9:45 a.m., a semi-truck hit a taxi cab traveling west just before the construction zone, then kept on going. At that point, another sedan parked behind the taxi, raising concerns about what might happen next. Which was absolutely nothing, except the cops got there to help out.

Friday, May 27

1200 block of Magnolia Avenue. At 11:15 a.m. police received a call about someone screaming. Police located the source, just south of Anaheim Street, so they shut down Magnolia between Anaheim and 11th streets in order to resolve the situation, police said.

About 3:20 p.m. officers detained the suspect without incident outside of the home. The nearby streets were reopened at that time. The source of the screaming and how it relates to the situation is unclear as is the reason the suspect was a suspect. So there.

Sunday, May 29

2700 block of Palo Verde. A driver who might well benefit from driver’s training hit two parked cars at 9:15 p.m.

Monday, May 30

Artesia Boulevard at Myrtle Avenue. At 3:51 p.m., a Nissan Altima, driven by a 22-year-old female with her 16-year-old sister, 14-year-old brother and two 19 and 16- year-old male friends, collided with a Chevrolet Camaro. “As the Chevrolet turned south, the two vehicles struck each other causing the Altima to ricochet south striking the metal traffic control light pole,” officials said in a release. The 33-year-old Long Beach driver of the Camaro had a suspended license, but police did not say if they have arrested or cited him for the violation. Nobody in the Altima appeared to be wearing a seatbelt and all suffered traumatic injuries in the crash according to police. The Camaro driver was wearing a seatbelt and was unhurt. On the following Friday, the 16-year-old sister of the Altima driver died at the hospital from a to a traumatic head wound. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to authorities.

Tuesday, May 31

1500 block of Magnolia Ave. At 2:16 a.m., fire units responded to an fire alarm with smoke at a two story apartment. During primary search operations, they found a deceased adult male in the bedroom. The fire was extinguished at approximately 2:30 a.m. Later, it was determined that the fire resulted from smoking in bed.

Bluff Park. A young man walked up behind people with a spike in his hand at 10:30 a.m., then began moseying over to Bixby Park. No doubt intent on spiking up his park tour.
