Sunday, July 7
2800 block of Cherry Ave. At 5:30 p.m., a vehicle driven at a high speed by Juan Fernandez Aguilar rear-ended another car, which then hit a tree, killing Sheldon Turchin, 88, of Marina Del Rey and a woman in her 70s at the scene. Aguilar was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, DUI causing injury, felony hit-and-run and driving on a suspended or revoked license. He also had five warrants out for his arrest. He and the passenger in his car suffered minor injuries. After being treated at the hospital, Aguilar was transported to the Los Angeles County Jail.
Monday, July 8
14th St. and San Francisco Ave. At 12:29 p.m., a person with a gun call resulted in the recovery of a full slate: a firearm, a replica firearm, drugs and the arrest of a “prohibited possessor.”
6000 block of Long Beach Blvd. At 2:11 p.m., in another person with a gun call, a recovery of a firearm and a prohibited possessor arrest ensued.
4900 Long Beach Blvd. At 9:03 p.m., two armed men entered a bar to assault a patron. The bar patron who was also armed meant a shoot-out at the OK corral-style between the visitors and the patron. As a result, one of the armed men, Arthur Rainey III, a 38-year-old resident of Los Angeles died at the scene, while his partner fled. Their opponent was struck in lower body and transported to a local hospital, while another person sustained a minor injury to upper body and was treated on scene.
Tuesday, July 9
700 block of East 20th St. At 8:53 p.m., two men in a passing car, one of whom fired a shot, hit a man with a non-life-threatening wound to the lower body, to a hospital in stable condition.
Wednesday, July 10
700 block of East First St. At 12:37 p.m., after the fatal shooting of a neighboring man with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, John Higginbotham, a 64-year-old resident of Long Beach was booked for murder. Bail: $2,000,000.
Thursday, July 11
1400 block of Locust Ave. At 6:33 p.m., in a less than ideal circumstance, an unconscious man in a vehicle had a gun on his lap. Police attempted to contact the gunster to de-escalate the incident. When he refused to cooperate with officers’ orders to exit the vehicle, officers deployed a 40mm less-lethal round, which was unsuccessful. They then after deployed a K9, which worked. An arrest and recovery of the firearm followed. Anthony Michael Rosado, 41, was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance for non-life-threatening injuries to his upper and lower body ahead of booking on one count of a prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, driving under the influence and grand theft auto. Bail: $200,000.
Friday, July 12
300 block of Golden Shore. A 9:09 p.m. traffic stop devolved into the recovery of a firearm and an arrest.
Saturday, July 13
1900 block of Lemon Ave. At 10:08 p.m., as the result of a shooting from a passing vehicle, a man self-transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body.
Sunday, July 14
6200 block of Atlantic Ave. A trio of male, early morning walkers morphed into a 4:10 a.m. walker-to-walker stabbing with a non-life-threatening wounds to the upper body, a stable condition hospitalization. The two other walkers continued walking before officers arrived.
1600 block of East Artesia Blvd. At 4:43 p.m., a “person with a gun call” resulted in the recovery of a gun and an arrest.
1500 block of Locust Ave. At 9:31 p.m., a man experienced a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the lower body by a shooter unknown to him.
Tuesday, July 16
San Gabriel River north of Pacific Coast Hwy. When at 10:30 a.m., a red and black Jeep was driven into the waters of the flood control channel, the driver climbed atop the vehicle and requested a rescue, to which authorities obliged. No serious injuries reported, but whether the Jeep was stolen, that’s under investigation.
Ocean Blvd. near Pacific Ave. At 4:10 p.m., a man got into another man’s vehicle holding a firearm-looking object, robbery the apparent motive. The suspect and his fake gun were taken into custody a short time later, and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.
Wednesday, July 17
1800 Block of Cherry Ave. A 3:45 a.m. two-man argument morphed into a stabbing, the superficial kind to the upper body.
Thursday, July 18
Carson St. and Atlantic Ave. At 10:15 a.m., a man and a woman exited a bus, after a brief verbal exchange, he “proceeded to sexually batter the victim.” These circumstances were repeated with another victim at 10:56 a.m. at Artesia Blvd. and Atlantic Ave. Later that day, George Marquez, 21, was booked for attempted rape, penetration with a foreign object and two warrants for terrorize causing fear and battery. Bail: $242,000.
Extended Stay America at 4105 E. Willow St. At 3:33 p.m., a man with upper body gunshot wounds was found. in a hotel room. Taken to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
