Alamitos Ave. and New York St. During a 6:36 p.m. traffic stop, with an arrest warrant, two firearms were found in the prohibited possessor passenger’s possession.
600 block of East South St. At 6:58 a.m., Ali Jabbaar Phannix, a 43-year-old male was shot in the upper body and expired at the scene.
5800 Lime Ave. At 11:52 p.m., a nearly midnight shooter carried out the tradition of firing shots at an innocently unoccupied car, moving on to the next likely target.
Tuesday, August 20
710 Freeway at Willow St. At 10 p.m., a brushy area at the side of the freeway resembled a flame-thrower celebration.
Wednesday, August 21
Cherry Ave. and East Del Amo Blvd; At 11:05 p.m., a vehicle collided with a gas pump at a 76 gas station, two people hospital-bound with trauma.
4900 block Long Beach Blvd. At 11:25 p.m., quickly becoming a prime location for late night and even afternoon gunfire with five shots from a white or silver vehicle driving by a bar. Casings recovered.
Friday, August 23
Seventh St. and Locust Ave. At 6 p.m. police set up a DUI checkpoint at a heavily traveled access and egress corridor. Eleven drivers were cited for driving without a valid license, two drivers arrested for DUI, an expensive Friday night decision. Enough said.
Saturday, August 24
4900 block Long Beach Blvd. At 5:11 p.m., hardly two days had expired when the unknown shooter or son, daughter or apprentice of unknown shooter returned to do his or her thing.
5100 block Long Beach Blvd. Just five hours, at 10:40 p.m. and two blocks away from above mystery shooting, this time a man with a gun firing shots, police found two humans who fit the description of the man with the gun with a third person still outstanding.
10th Street and Alamitos Ave. An 8:19 p.m. pedestrian stop resulted in a firearm being in the possession of a prohibited possessor, who was duly arrested.
Sunday, August 25
5500 block of Lemon Ave. At 3:25 a.m., another denizen of the dark found jolly fun waking the local populace with random bursts of gunfire.
800 block of West 14th St. This time, at 5:20 p.m., a bicycle stop resulted in a firearm being in the possession of a prohibited possessor, who was duly arrested.
Monday, August 26
Long Beach. At a 1:59 p.m. hit-and-run traffic collision, a participant threw a firearm from the window, which police recovered as the suspect fled the area.
Wednesday, August 28
5800 Falcon Ave. At 9:30 p.m., a man exited a residence, shot at a woman, then walked back inside. Suspecting a barricade situation, police established a perimeter, attempted to call out the shooter. SWAT responded and attempted to de-escalate, then deployed gas. Salvador Salazar, an 80-year-old resident of Long Beach, surrendered, then was transported to a hospital for medical clearance prior to booking for attempted murder. Bail: $1,000,000. Officers recovered a firearm.
Thursday, August 29
1300 block of Long Beach Blvd. At 12:15 p.m., two self-described local men in line at a Payday Advance business began hurling bold threats at one another, each intending to harm the other, that their group of friends would get involved. It got so loud and dramatic that a non-local customer in line, worried that a fight might ensue, left the business and called 9-1-1 to report possible violent activity. He watched as one of the men left the storefront, then another on a bicycle. No violence, no fight, no back-up group of friends. He called back to 9-1-1, saying the problem was resolved, not realizing that most likely, this was a planned play-let acted out for his benefit, to mess up a stranger’s mind. Apparently it worked. Or it could’ve been for real.
1000 block of Obispo Ave. At a 2:41 p.m. vehicle traffic stop, a firearm and ammunition were recovered from a prohibited possessor and an arrest followed.
200 block of Aquarium Way. At 9:42 p.m., during a man-woman argument, three male teens attempted to de-escalate; the man and a teen fought, the man fired shots, striking no one. Everyone departed. Later police found a man at West Shoreline Drive brandishing a firearm, who turned out to be the suspected arguing/fighting/shooting man. A firearm was recovered and Iopu Kaino Tauiliili, 22 of Las Vegas, was arrested for robbery and assault with a firearm. Bail: $50,000.
Friday, August 30
Wardlow Rd. and Cerritos Ave. At 1:46 a.m., a shooter unknown, confirmed by evidence at the scene, the shooter departing after the disruptive event. This time, an arrest of a man in the area for unrelated charges. Involvement in the shooting not known.
Saturday, August 31
5500 block of Pageantry St. After a late night of suspected prowling on the block, a parolee-burglar was caught red-handed near Spring Street and Bellflower Blvd. with a red lawn chair snatched from a front porch at 4:30 a.m.
Paramount Blvd. and Artesia Blvd. At 6:13 p.m., bicycle stop led the recovery of a firearm and an arrest.
Anaheim St. and the 710 Fwy. A 7:20 p.m. traffic stop led the recovery of a firearm and an arrest.
