3000 block of Caspian Ave. At 5 a.m., 28-year-old Mark Lorenzo Villanueva found out what allegedly donating substantial funds to supposed ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) fighters meant in the real world: an FBI visit, arrest and a no-bail confinement. Seems that ISIS is a designated foreign terrorist organization, according to the Department of Justice. Villanueva, a permanent US resident originally from the Philippines who resides with his grandparents faces up to 20 years in federal prison for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Villanueva sent a dozen payments totaling $1,615 to two intermediaries who accessed the money overseas in a possible sting operation.
In reference to these donations, Villanueva supposedly wrote, “It’s an honor to fight and die for our faith. It’s the best way to go to heaven. Someday soon, I’ll be joining.” Someday soon turned out to be the FBI visit during which the FBI recovered several knives and what appeared to be a bomb with ball-bearings wrapped in cellophane. Arraignment scheduled for Aug. 15 at the Roybal Federal Building in Los Angeles, acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli offered boilerplate about “supporting a terrorist group, whether at home or abroad, is a serious risk to our national security.”
