Monday, February 16

710 and 405 Fwy. interchange. With 2.12 inches of rain, only one lane was open under Long Beach Boulevard. Traffic was thus impacted and not in a good way.

Wednesday, February 18

Pacific Coast Hwy. and Maine Ave. At 9:29 p.m., an eastbound white 2006 Chevy Trailblazer collided with pedestrian Ramon Maldonado, 39, of Hacienda Heights who was crossing the street outside a crosswalk. Maldonado succumbed on scene. The driver remained on scene and was cooperative.

East Seventh St. and St. Louis Ave. At 10:48 p.m., an eastbound 2007 Toyota Tundra collided with pedestrian Sabas De La Rosa, 34, who walked into the roadway between two parked cars. The driver remained at the scene. De La Rosa succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

Thursday, February 19

1500 W. Willow. At 8:57 a.m., operating under the “why drive to multiple locations,” a fire in a unique taco truck storage dash cam installation smog check fingernail lawn mower repair business was doused after the experts-in-fire folks arrived.

6331 Spring St. As a female driver experienced a medical crisis, at 11:12 a.m., her black SUV penetrated the front window of Unleashed by Petco, knocking down a support pillar in the shop, knocking over a counter, damaging the ceiling. The driver was removed to a hospital to treat her medical problem, while a repair crew showed up to fix the window, work still underway as of the following Saturday. No customers, employees or animals were harmed in this drive-thru incident.

Friday, February 20

900 block E. Pacific Coast Hwy. At 3:55 p.m., a deceased person near the donut shop meant a police body shield.

Saturday, February 21

Lakewood Blvd. tunnel south of Spring St. At 1:18 a.m., a southbound 2008 Honda hit the center divider and the concrete tunnel pillar, which resulted in a fire and the death of the four young occupants: Amber Delgado, 22 of Huntington Park was found outside the vehicle, her brother, Brian Delgado, 28, with burns and smoke inhalation, Isabel Acevedo, 22 and Caleb Gainer, 22 of Gardena, all deceased at the scene from fatal blunt-force trauma. In addition to Long Beach Police, the accident is being investigated by the CHP and the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) in regard to the tunnel which supports the LGB runway, which is directly over the scene of the collision.

Sunday, February 22

100 block Pacific Ave. The victim of a 10:36 a.m. upper body stabbing near the Lincoln Park skate park arrived near the Metro train station, then was hospital bound. A person of interest was detained, then released, as a “guy walking north toward the library” describes more than a few of those seen on the street.

5300 block of Locust Ave. At 12:49 p.m., a 14-year-old male was approached by a male suspect. “The victim attempted to flee, but the suspect pursued him on foot and fired several shots, striking the victim,” said a police statement. “The suspect then approached and pistol-whipped the victim. The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officers’ arrival.” With gunshot wounds to the upper body, officers rendered lifesaving medical aid, including administering chest seals and a tourniquet. The boy was transported to the hospital in critical condition and is now in stable condition. On February 23, gang detectives identified the suspect as a 14-year-old male resident of Long Beach and arrested him in the city of Lakewood. Long Beach resident Jian Xavier Salas, 19, was arrested for his involvement in the shooting. He was booked for attempted murder and accessory after the fact. Bail: $75,000.

Monday, February 23

3100 block N. Gold Star Dr. A 10:18 p.m. reported fall turned fatal. Fire personnel attempted resuscitation but determined the subject deceased. Circumstances were deemed suspicious enough to request a body shield, meaning more investigation necessary.

1100 block Queens Hwy. At 10:36 p.m., a body floating near the stern of the Queen Mary and the cruise terminal caused recovery operations to be initiated. No word as to identity, gender, age or circumstances

Tuesday, February 24

Southbound 405 Fwy. near Long Beach Blvd. In a 6:45 a.m. collision in the HOV lane, motorcyclist Andres Alfaro, 28, was killed. After impact, a van’s tire struck a third vehicle after colliding with the motorcycle rider, meaning multiple lanes were closed.

Friday, February 27

31st St. and Chestnut Ave. At 6:07 a.m., without ribbon-cutting or press release, an unscheduled sinkhole caused an unwanted street closure.

Saturday, February 28

Atlantic Ave. and Artesia Blvd. At 2:06 a.m., while driving his car, a shooter in another vehicle shot a teenage male juvenile, who took his non-life-threatening upper body gunshot wounds to a hospital for treatment, thus involving authorities.

7100 block of Wardlow Rd. At 10:46 a.m., after colliding with another vehicle, a sedan with two elderly passengers flipped, ending up leaning against a house. As noted by a witness, “there were two people in the car upside down. They were using the jaws of life to get the car doors off and the paramedics were there to take them in the hospital.” Theories about speed, young drivers and lack of stop signs abounded.

Sunday, March 1

200 Block of Pine Avenue. At 3:32 p.m., LBPD officers responded to the 200 block of Pine Avenue regarding a shooting involving multiple victims. Three male, adult victims were transported to a local hospital, where one victim succumbed to his injuries. The other two victims were in stable condition. Homicide detectives responded to the scene. The motive and circumstances of the shooting, as well as suspect information, remain under investigation.
