CSULB. White supremacy and racist graffiti was found at Cal State Long Beach using the common word used to denigrate African-Americans. “The graffiti was written with a marker in capital letters inside a men’s bathroom stall in lecture halls 150-151 and was reported to University Police,” according to the Daily 49er. “As I have shared with you before, I vigorously condemn messages that demean any group,” said President Jane Close Conoley  in an email to students and faculty. “In this case, our Black students and organizations, as well as our entire community, can be assured that when we discover the source of this or any other vitriolic graffiti, we will remove it immediately and continue to investigate perpetrators.” The CSULB Black Student Union said that they were thankful for Conoley’s words of support and that they will continue to condemn hate speech on campus. “It is our intent to continuously empower Black students and BSU members by any means necessary.”

Tuesday, October 10

1600 block of E. Anaheim St. A 9:25 p.m. shooting at S R Liquor & Market took the lives of 21-year-old Danny Bunthung and 22-year-old Dallas Som, both men from Long Beach. Apparently the shooting involved a physical altercation with the shooter or shooters, a conflict which escalated. Arriving officers found four wounded men inside the store, police said. Bunthung was declared dead at the scene; two others were taken to the hospital where Som died; and the fourth was treated for minor wounds at the store.

Wednesday October 11

Cherry Ave. and E. Spring St. A three-vehicle collision at 1:15 a.m. killed one person and injured several others, who were transported to local hospitals with injuries of varying severity, police said. Police did not immediately report the number of people injured. Both northbound Cherry Avenue and eastbound Spring Street were closed for the investigation.

Ball Rd. and Bloomfield St. At the city line of the far eastern part of Long Beach, at 2:09 p.m., a car crashed into Chase Bank signage and came to rest at the drive-through, critically injuring four adult pedestrians at the intersection. The Orange County Fire Authority said all of the pedestrians were taken to hospitals with critical injuries. Officials said the driver, a woman in her 30s, was taken to a hospital for treatment. The crash was handled and is being investigated by Los Alamitos Police.

Friday, October 13

5700 block of California Ave. At 8:20 a.m., police got a call about a fight between a man and a woman. In a video, two to four people begin scuffling, then move into the street and out of the frame. Three then appear, one of them lying on the ground in a driveway with a man and a woman hitting the person on the ground with buckets. One of the buckets bursts open dumping a white powdery material onto him and onto the sidewalk. The police arrived and placed a handcuffed man into a squad car. At 9:20 a.m., the handcuffed man, bleeding from the face and covered in what appeared to be the white powder, is removed from the black and white and police photograph and interview him. All of this activity was recorded. According to the police, they have detained a possible suspect.

6000 block of Village Rd. According to a post on NextDoor, “We saw a big coyote walking in the middle of our street at 7:15 p.m. tonight.” Another poster responded, “Last week I saw a big fat gray rat walking down the middle of Monlaco Road around 10 p.m. I wish those two animals could hook up.”

Saturday, October 14.

Shoreline Dr. south of Ocean Blvd. At 10:40 p.m., police responded to an injury traffic collision with a 2003 Nissan on fire and pulled the driver from the vehicle. The fire department responded, put out the vehicle fire and transported the injured driver to a local hospital with critical injuries. A female passenger in the Nissan, 19-year-old Long Beach woman, Nayomi Rodriguez was ejected during the collision and was determined deceased at the scene. The male driver, Alexcis Fabian Payan-Velazquez, a 19-year- old resident of Long Beach, later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicated the Nissan was northbound on Shoreline Drive from Linden Avenue when it made an unsafe lane change in front of a 2011 Infinity and lost control, collided with the raised center median, a tree and then a concrete barrier. After colliding with the concrete barrier the Nissan collided with the Infinity and stopped near the east curb of Shoreline Drive. The driver of the Infinity remained at the scene and its uninjured driver, a 24-year-old resident of Long Beach, cooperated with the investigation and was later released from the scene.
