Sunday, October 15
Gerald Desmond Bridge. At the western foot of the bridge, at 2:15 p.m., a stolen truck caused an accident with at least four other vehicles, sending three participants to several hospitals. Not the driver, though, who hopped into a passing black Dodge Charger going the other way, making his stolen car also a case of hit and run. Nice.
Monday, October 16
Redondo Avenue and First Street. A yellow rental truck literally took out a defenseless stop sign on its southbound journey at 9:45 a.m.
Thursday, October 19
East Long Beach. At 3:40 p.m., a pickup truck entered Long Beach at Carson Street. Many do, but this one was barreling out of Orange County with L.A. County Sheriff cars in pursuit. The driver took a wrong-way route on Carson for about half the journey, turned left onto Woodruff, turned right on Mezzanine to Bellflower, where he made a right and left onto Wardlow. He drove well into the airport, decided not to fly, right onto Lakewood Blvd., much of it the wrong way including under the Lakewood Tunnel to the Traffic Circle, onto PCH, U-turn at Termino, back to the circle, then near Park Ave., stopped his truck, raised his hands and gave up to at least 15 deputy cruisers at 3:55 p.m. Long Beach police were only there to block traffic after the fact.
Friday, October 20
Shoreline Drive. A woman wearing garbage bags was taking items from a shrine set up for the two recent traffic deaths at 9:45 a.m.
6200 block of E. Pacific Coast Hwy. A few days after several narrow streets in the Belmont Shore Mobile Estates had been dug up into trenches, a noontime gas leak in a natural gas pipeline from two wells prompted an evacuation of the park and of nearby Cerritos Bahia Marina clubhouses. There was a large hazmat response. Then firefighters ended the leak by shutting off a valve at 1:48 p.m. and everyone went home.
Sunday, October 22
2200 block of Bellflower Blvd. At 3:15 p.m., a male in his 50s was reportedly “doing donuts” in the parking lot, though Trader Joe’s is not a promising outlet for those seeking donuts.
Tuesday, October 24
Anaheim Street and Ximeno Avenue. At noon, a man, who had been shot, was found by police in a vehicle with wounds to his upper body. A woman near the scene was detained and the man was taken to an area hospital, condition unknown.
Thursday, October 26
59th Street and Walnut Avenue. A suspect in the October 10 slaying of two young men Cambodia Town liquor store, 30-year-old Long Beach resident, Morris Om was driving a silver Lexus near 59th Street and Walnut Avenue at 10:12 a.m., when police tried to pull him over. A chased ensued, Om crashed at Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway and he was arrested. Police had already arrested Brenda Sok, 24, and Tiffany Som, 27. Still outstanding is 30-year-old Savanna Sok, brother of Brenda Sok. After the pursuit, police searched a home in the 5900 block of Walnut Avenue and took a second person into custody.
Charlemagne Avenue and Harco Street. According to a poster on Nextdoor, “There were two coyotes out last night around 10 p.m. Please let your neighbors know who like to walk at night. Coyotes have been known to take smaller leashed animals. This area is a hot bed. We have personally found numerous cat pieces in our yard and have witnessed two coyotes pulling a cat apart.” Fair warning.
Monday, October 30
Second Street and Nieto Avenue. At 6:30 p.m., a battery occurred. Police officers on the scene observed a yelling and screaming 39-year-old Damon Reed of Long Beach, who had allegedly confronted a man and his two daughters, struck the man in the face and struggled with the victim, who was helped by a witness until police arrived. Reed was arrested and was booked for battery and held at the city jail on $750 bail.
Wednesday, November 1
1700 Palo Verde Avenue. At 9 p.m., a guy entered a convenience market, stole something, went outside and began rolling joints with an associate, stuffing the contents of his theft into a trash receptacle. All of this in view of a great local source of higher education, indeed.
Friday, November 3
850 Long Beach Blvd. At 9:20 a.m., a stabbing took place in an office building. Police at the scene cordoned off a storefront in a nearby shopping center and taped off an alleyway where there was blood on the asphalt. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, unknown how bad the wounds.
Saturday, November 4
2100 block of Bellflower Blvd. At 2 p.m., four youths ran out of a retail establishment, each carrying a handful of clothing. They jumped into a silver Honda and hi-tailed it west on Abbeyfield Street. No need for hands being full, plastic bags are still available for non-food items at most retailers.
