Thursday, January 11

Wilmington. At 4:50 p.m., the Long Beach Police SWAT Team served a search warrant at a residence in the 900 block of N. Marine in the City of Wilmington, looking for 32 year-old Wilmington resident, Ezequiel Cuebas wanted for an attempted murder on the 1700 block of Cedar Avenue in December 26, 2017. Detectives recovered numerous firearms, including an assault rifle. It is not known at this time if any of the weapons seized during the search warrant were used in the original shooting.

Friday, January 12

Golden Shore. At 10:45 p.m. a male was arrested on suspicion of having a small mirror he used to watch other people shower, despite the fact the Internet is loaded with such images from many shower rooms.

Tuesday, January 16

5900 block of Spring Street. At 12:15 p.m., narcotic detectives served a search warrant on a parked RV, arresting 53-year-old Long Beach resident Steven Starr on charges of selling a controlled substance after community complaints about drug trafficking and door package theft. According to the office of Fifth District Councilwoman Stacy Mungo, the warrant “resulted in one arrest for sales of meth and heroin.” Starr was booked at city jail on $30,000 bail.

Wednesday, January 17

Long Beach. As a result of an investigation into five armed robberies between Nov. 24, 2017 and Jan. 3, 2018, police arrested Cody Joel Ibershoff, 34, of Long Beach and 51-year-old Jesus Cortez of Compton. Detectives served search warrants at their homes and recovered three replica firearms, a shotgun and other evidence that tied the two men to the series of robberies between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., in which the robbers, armed with handguns fled with cash.

No one was injured during the robberies, the most recent of which took place on the 3100 block of Bellflower Blvd on December 18 and two robberies which took place on Jan. 3 on the 2400 block of Bellflower Blvd and on the 4400 block of East Broadway. Police said, “throughout the investigation detectives uncovered similarities in each of the robberies that led them to identify the suspects.” Cortez was being held in lieu of $1.65 million bail and Ibershoff in lieu of $635,000.

Thursday, January 18

Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street. A 9:15 p.m. carjacking from a homeless car owner occurred with the jacker driving north, running red lights and driving on the shoulder into Lakewood and beyond. A witness to the carjacking followed the victim car, which reportedly ended up in an alley near Lakewood Blvd., north of Artesia, in Bellflower. Suspect seen walking away either into a liquor store or on Clark Avenue, destination unknown.

Friday, January 19

Long Beach Boulevard and Spring Street. At 10:33 p.m. Long Beach resident, Jaslyn Ouch, 20 was killed and four others suffered critical injuries Friday night in a two-vehicle collision. The surviving victims were trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed using the Jaws of Life. The four survivors were taken to trauma centers in critical condition.

Saturday, January 20

Artesia Boulevard and Cherry Avenue. At 6 p.m., police set up a checkpoint to either welcome or bid adieu to drivers who might be intoxicated or drugged. Out of 265 drivers screened, one marijuana DUI arrest occurred, six drivers were cited for operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license, five drivers were cited for being unlicensed and two citations issued for unsafe driving, with unsafe left undefined.

2400 block of Baltic Avenue. At 6 p.m. A police-involved shooting took place when
“officers saw a suspicious person on a bicycle,” said the police. “They attempted to contact that person, however he subsequently fled from them on foot.” The suspect, 25-year-old Luis Perez of Long Beach ran into to the alley between Adriatic and Baltic Avenues, where he was caught by an officer. “The suspect was non-compliant with our officer’s commands and fought the officer,” said the police. “The suspect punched our officer in the face and tried to disarm him which led to the officer involved shooting.”

Perez was wounded in the leg. “The suspect was then handcuffed and taken into custody.” At the hospital, police said the wound was not considered life threatening. Perez was on active felony probation for burglary, according to police, and no officers were injured.

Tuesday, January 23

Ximeno Avenue and Anaheim Street. Third District Councilwoman Suzie Price warned commuters of possible delays as “a mechanical failure occurred while a gas main was being installed and a plan has been established to resolve the problem. I want to assure you that there is no emergency, but the traffic impact will be severe.” Which sounded like an emergency to some who had to use certain sections of Anaheim Street and Ximeno Avenue through Friday, Jan. 27.
