Obispo Avenue and Eleventh Street. At 8 p.m. a woman was called outside and was forced into a silver sedan, red hooded, chrome wheeled Chevy Caprice, for a getaway on westbound 11th Street.

Saturday, February 17

Atlantic Avenue near Broadway. According to a local merchant, police responded to a call about a possible meth lab at a nearby motel room at 8 a.m. Streets were closed off in the area as the cops dealt with this unwelcome case of entrepreneurship.

Atlantic Place and Atlantic Avenue. At 10:05 p.m., 27-year-old Wilbur Loza of Los Angeles was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze southbound on Atlantic Place close to where it dead-ends into Atlantic Avenue. As police said, “the driver failed to negotiate a turn at the end of the roadway and drove over a raised median and into the northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue,” crashing into a northbound 2014 Toyota Corolla driven by a 24-year-old male from Compton, with his 20-year-old female passenger from Los Angeles. Loza died at the scene. Both occupants of the Toyota were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Sunday, February 18

Second Street and Bay Shore Avenue. At 7:25 p.m., police responded to a call that a man was pointing a gun at passing motorists. The man refused to obey police order to drop his weapon. Police used a K9 and a 40mm foam-bullet via a launcher to subdue and arrest Joel Peterson, a 42-year-old Long Beach resident. After the arrest, a replica gun was found in the street. He was treated for minor injuries and charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting or obstructing police in lieu of $30,000 bail. Subsequently, videos have surfaced of the standoff, the man with his pants down and his hands on his head as if to prove he had no weapons as bystanders on the busy street loudly voiced objections to the officers as they were in the process of arresting him.

Monday, February 19

Lakewood Blvd. and Willow Street. A cop car was tangled into a rear end fender bender at 4:30 p.m.

Bellflower Blvd. and Parkcrest Street. Somehow a falling tree branch hit a vehicle in the number one lane at 4:50 p.m. Not known if the tree had sufficient insurance coverage.

Tuesday, February 20

Aquarium Way. At 11 p.m., a large group of males was reported fighting, but when the cops got there, all was seemingly peaceful, nothing fishy was found.

Wednesday, February 21

Millikan High School. Classmates overheard a 15-year-old student making a threat to hurt people at the campus and told the school staff who called police around 11:15 a.m., resulting in the arrest of the student. School officials had already increased security after online rumors were reported a possible shooting plot at Long Beach Poly High School, though Long Beach wasn’t mentioned and it was unclear where that school was located.

Wilson High School. At 2:30 p.m. a 16-year-old, who was overheard making threats to harm others, was also taken into custody. Authorities said there was no connection between these several cases. The district sent out a press release, thanking “the students who came forward with important information.”

Thursday, February 22

Petaluma Avenue south of Atherton Street. A 14-year-old eighth grader at Tincher Preparatory School was detained at noon when a staff member overheard students talking about a threat.

Friday, February 23

710 Freeway and Anaheim Street. At 12:41 a.m., officers were dispatched to a possible traffic accident involving a small white car on the grass portion of the on ramp to the 710 Freeway from westbound Anaheim Street. Inside was an unresponsive male adult, later identified as Glen Chico, 31-year-old resident of Long Beach, who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso was declared deceased at the scene. It’s unknown exactly where shooting occurred. Homicide detectives were called to investigate. Anaheim Street was completely closed in the area as were several 710 off ramps for several hours, re-opening just before 8 a.m.

6600 block of Wardlow Road. At 9:30 p.m., a truck ran into the garage of a single family house on the north side of the road. Police said this was a hit and run, “a heavy set male Hispanic” fleeing eastbound on Wardlow Road on foot. The fire department was called in because of possible structural damage and a huge plywood board was required to secure the building.

Saturday, February 24

Eastbound 91 Freeway. At 1 a.m., Luis Alfredo Perez of Placentia, who just turned 29, rode Guera, his Arabian horse, on the freeway before exiting at Downey Avenue, traversing Long Beach, then doubling back into Bellflower. With blood alcohol levels at 0.21 percent, more than double the legal limit, the CHP arrested Perez for DUI on a horse, of course. Avoiding arrest, Guera was returned to the rider’s mom.
