Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Pacific Coast Hwy. At 7:30 a.m., police responded to reports of a man garbed in black with a gun in his hand, sounding like a Jimi Hendrix oldie, or maybe Johnny Cash.
Tuesday, February 27
1250 Bellflower Blvd. At 1:20 p.m., a quantity of lithium in solid and liquid forms exploded in a beaker and caused a fire, injuring one person and prompting evacuations of the Cal State Long Beach Engineering and Computer Science Building. A professor was treated at the scene for an injury and was in stable condition when taken to a hospital, according to Long Beach Fire. The fire was knocked down by 1:50 p.m., but crews remained to ventilate the building and hazmat specialists were assessing the situation.
1500 block of Summit Avenue. At 4:20 p.m., Erick Aguirre, a 23-year-old Bloomington resident allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend. Her mother called police, claiming he may have been armed with a knife. Long Beach police then called in help from a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter, which spotted Aguirre’s Chevy Silverado pick-up truck on the 91 Freeway onto the northbound 57 Freeway. When the truck failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated. The Highway Patrol took over the chase, which headed onto the 210 Freeway, officers using a PIT maneuver to send the truck spinning onto the shoulder at 5:25 p.m. Long Beach police took custody of Aguirre and continue to investigate the kidnapping allegation. The female passenger was not arrested. Aguirre was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, recklessly evading police, grand theft auto, vehicle theft and domestic violence and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Wednesday, February 28
Atlantic Avenue and 53rd Street. A man, who appeared to be in his 60s, was struck by a northbound vehicle on Atlantic Avenue at 8:50 p.m. He was unconscious when police arrived and paramedics quickly took him to a local hospital.
Thursday, March 1
3200 block of Monogram Avenue. At 10:35 a.m., police were called by Cubberley K-8 School to assist a board of education school safety officer about a possible threat of violence. Officers determined there was probable cause to arrest a 13-year-old male 8th grader for criminal threats. The juvenile was taken to Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.
Friday, March 2
Atlantic Avenue south of 60th Street. As a result of a 1:50 p.m. traffic collision in which a Dodge rear ended an Accura, some reporting parties alleged the Dodge driver attempted to flee. When the cops arrived, they saw members of the crowd holding onto the female driver in an effective anti-flight maneuver.
Saturday, March 3
1800 block of Gardenia Avenue. At 12:25 a.m., someone started shooting into a home and hit a man and a woman who were inside, but their wounds weren’t life-threatening.
Terminal Island Freeway at Pier A Way. Bicyclist Cole Micek, 24, of San Pedro, was struck and killed by two hit-and-run motorists. Found by police at 3 a.m. on the northbound lanes, Micek was pronounced dead at the scene. A white 2015-17 Toyota Camry and a late-1990s Honda Accord with a distinctive dark hood and a sunroof were possibly involved. Anyone who has information should call detective Sirilo Garcia at 562-570-7132.
52nd Street and Elm Avenue. At 3:10 p.m., a man in a car heard shots, then realized he’d been hit by gunfire. He walked into a local hospital where staffers called police. The man is expected to survive.
Seventh Street and Locust Avenue. At a 6 p.m. DUI checkpoint, police arrested four drivers for DUI; cited eight drivers for operating a vehicle with a suspended or revoked license; two drivers cited for being unlicensed and five for unsafe driving. To be sure, a checkpoint on one of the few well-used routes to leave the city.
Sunday, March 4
Shoreline Village. At 9:50 a.m., when security asked a woman to leave a rest room, she threw a brick in their direction.
Monday, March 5
400 block of E. Anaheim Street. A hammer-wielding man threatened to attack a woman in the drive-thru lane at a fast-food restaurant at 10:30 a.m. Arnold Darwin, a 54-year-old Long Beach resident was arrested for attempted assault with a deadly weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine and making criminal threats. Fast food not so fast in this case.
Wednesday, March 7
300 block of West Ocean Boulevard. A woman called police at 4 p.m., saying her husband had a gun and was threatening to “blow up the federal building.” Police located 53-year-old Oregon resident, Donald McFarlane at his van near the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building. SWAT officers negotiated with the man, who refused to put down an apparent handgun. At 6 p.m., SWAT officers fired non-lethal rubber-baton rounds and deployed gas to subdue McFarlane. “The suspect then pointed the handgun at SWAT officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a news release. McFarlane was taken to a hospital where he died. Sheriff bomb squad personnel searched a garage McFarlane was renting in the 600 block of Elm Avenue, and a white Ford work van parked in front, finding no explosives.
