Wednesday, September 19
1500 block of Atlantic Avenue. After 3 p.m., police received a call about a person with a gun at Poly High School. Officers conducted a safety sweep of the school with no weapons recovered and no reports of any shots fired. The campus was placed on lock down and reportedly some classrooms were locked until the students and teachers were brought out by police.
Friday, September 21
600 block of W. Seventh Street. Officers were dispatched to a hospital regarding a person with a gunshot wound at 1:45 a.m. Police returned to the neighborhood crime scene near Edison Elementary School. Turned out the injuries were non-life threatening and there’s no suspect information. Gang detectives investigated.
1900 block of W. Willow Street. At 2 a.m., an adult male was shot and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. Busy night for hospitals.
Sunday, September 23
500 block of Pico Avenue. At 2:17 a.m., police received numerous calls of “shots fired.” Upon arrival, police saw a man fleeing on foot and throwing a loaded firearm into a trash can, all signs of a shooter. Police stated, “Through their investigation, officers learned gunshots had been fired into the air at this location but no subjects had been hit.” Despite the lack of a victim, the gunman was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm. Another one to investigate as possibly gang-related.
2400 block of E. Anaheim Street. At 3:29 a.m.. police located a man with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. The injury wasn’t life-threatening, police said. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Tuesday, September 25
Anaheim Street near Pacific Avenue. At 8:45 p.m., a man was treated by paramedics for multiple lacerations to his lower torso, telling police he had been attacked by a knife wielder on a bike path near the 710 Freeway.
Anaheim Street near Pacific Avenue. At 10:15 p.m., a second man was treated for similar wounds, this time, a laceration to the upper torso. Police stated, “The victim stated he was assaulted at his encampment in the area.” Both victims were taken hospitals and expected to recover.
Wednesday, September 26
5200 block of Atlantic Avenue. At 12:15 a.m., a 20-year-old male was sitting in a blue Chevrolet Impala outside a Jack in the Box location, when he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Guy Eugene Alford III of Hawthorne was pronounced dead by paramedics. Alford was well-known and well-regarded in the football community, playing for LBCC for two years as a safety after graduating from Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills in 2016 and playing for Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach. Alford was finishing up a few classes to earn credits in order to qualify for a scholarship to a Division I college football program. No suspect descriptions have been released.
Monday, October 1
East Second Street near Quincy Avenue. At 12:15 a.m., police officers found a man with multiple stab wounds to his upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Wednesday, October 3
Cedar Avenue near 20th Street. At 3:30 a.m. police involved in a narcotics investigation served a warrant at a home with support from a SWAT team. Nobody was arrested.
Shoreline Village. At 6 a.m., the body of a homeless man identified as Billy Turner, 39, was found floating in the water. There weren’t any obvious signs of trauma.
Olive Avenue and 61st Street. At 11 p.m., a sheriff pursuit of a suspected DUI driver conducted on both city streets and a freeway ended in Long Beach when the suspect crashed into a parked car. Post-crash, four people jumped out of the car and ran away. Deputies captured two of the men. Deputies also found three loaded handguns. A sheriff’s official said at least one of the guns was tossed out of the car during the pursuit.
Friday, October 5
Fourth Street and Franklin Place. Came a midnight shooting from a passing car, so said a female adult witness. Though there was evidence of said shooting, no injuries were reported. Police are investigating, but have no vehicle or suspect description.
Saturday, October 6
Wardlow and Clark Ave. At 1 p.m., a 2002 Toyota collided with two cars in two separate incidents, reportedly fleeing onto airport grounds, backtracking and turning right onto Lakewood Blvd where it again collided near or at Spring Street, then stopped or was stopped to determine if the driver was under the influence or just subject to extremely incompetent driving practices.
Ravenna Avenue. At 2:45 p.m., an elderly man was seen driving in a car while holding a handgun.
Sunday, October 7
East Seventh Street and Quincy Avenue. At 4:55 p.m., three vehicles collided, but only two stayed for niceties like the trading of information, with a GMC Acadia heading elsewhere.
