Sunday, February 10.

Pacific Ocean. At 9:50 a.m., a man riding a red and white Yamaha personal watercraft to Catalina Island went missing when he failed to meet with a friend on the island. The Coast Guard initiated a search at 10:40 a.m., dispatching two vessels and a helicopter to search for 20-year-old Jean Carlos Cheryl, whose watercraft was found about five nautical miles away from the Long Beach Lighthouse at 1:45 p.m. Later that day, Cheryl was located and taken to a hospital, where he later died.

405 Freeway near the Bellflower Boulevard exit. At 12:25 p.m., police responded to a call about a disabled vehicle in northbound lanes of the freeway. Apparently, the person inside the vehicle was uncooperative to say the least. So uncooperative, the CHP shut down both sides of the 405 Freeway in Long Beach to deal with this man, who was thusly arrested. According to authorities, all freeway lanes reopened at 2:21 p.m. About the need for a closure, an officer reportedly said, “it’s too complicated to explain.” In the past, disabled cars have been assisted without such complications.

3700 block of Albury Avenue. At 11:05 p.m., police were called to a reported shooting, and found a man with a gunshot wound to his lower body. Taken to a hospital, he was treated to non-life-threatening wounds. Police suspect the motive might be gang-related.

Monday, February 11

Northbound Clark Avenue and Willow Street. At 2 p.m., a Jetta pursuit begun by CSULB Police was called off by city police, until it ventured into Lakewood territory on Paramount Blvd, which L.A. County Sheriff gladly took on with chopper support.

Palo Verde Avenue and Madera Street. Right across the street from a driving school, seven vehicles managed to get into it at 3:30 p.m., four of which blocked the right lane. Possibly had to do with departing CSULB commuter students.

800 block of Alamitos Avenue. Police served search warrants on four residences, seized methamphetamine and took five suspects into custody on drug sale charges, detaining 25 others. The arrestees, Roy Gehres 50, Ricky Powell, 56, Lewis Darden, 46, Matthew Hampton, 49, and Rodney Pearson, 64, all Long Beach residents, were each held on $30,000 bail. Others were arrested by parole agents on citations and parole violations.

Tuesday, February 12

Spring Street and Woodruff Avenue. Subsequent to a vehicle versus vehicle collision at 4:55 p.m., one of the drivers left the scene.

Wednesday, February 13

Stearns Street and Studebaker Road. An early morning water main break was addressed by the appropriate department, the fix expected to be in at 3 p.m. Good thing this is not a well-traveled intersection, unless of course you count the continuous in and out CSULB traffic, that’s what education’s all about.

4500 block of Pacific Coast Hwy. A male at a coffee drinking place touched another person’s groin, then ran into a passing bus at 1:30 p.m., thus committing sexual battery and evading by public transportation. Plan didn’t work as intended, as the bus stayed put and the suspect got cuffed up.

City of Compton. Three men were arrested for the Jan. 23 shooting death of a 24-year-old Maurice Ross of Compton at 200 block of Anaheim Street. Isaiah James Tucker, 36, of San Bernardino was arrested on suspicion of murder and Bryant Colton, 61, of Los Angeles and Sharrell Johnson, 31, of Long Beach were arrested on suspicion of being accessories after the fact. Police suspect the motive was a gang-related argument. A nearby woman, who was not involved in the altercation, was struck by gunfire and hospitalized for a non-life-threatening wound. Tucker was being held on no bail, while Colton and Johnson were held on $1 million bail.

Friday, February 15

Anaheim Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. At 8:35 p.m., police found a stabbing victim in the roadway with wounds to his upper torso. Taken to the hospital, he later died of his wounds. Reports indicate the victim may have been in a verbal dispute with two men before the stabbing.

Tuesday, February 19

East Artesia Boulevard and Muriel Avenue. At 6 p.m., a man who was shot, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A light-colored SUV might be involved.

Wednesday, February 20

15th Street and Magnolia Avenue. At the waking hour, otherwise known as 5:15 a.m., the SWAT team set off loud blasts and evacuated some buildings, as a suspect barricaded himself in an apartment. All for the sake of serving a gang unit and directive enforcement team search warrant. With Magnolia Avenue shut down between 15th Street and Cowles Street, at 9:30 a.m., residents were allowed back into their homes. At 10:30 a.m., one suspect was in custody.

Bellflower Blvd and Carson Street. At 9:50 a.m., a female transient was observed ripping out wires from an enclosed box, a possibly live wire kind of person.
