Tuesday, March 25

Clark Avenue just south of Harvey Way. At 1 p.m., a small car and an SUV collided, the SUV landing on its top. The occupant was injured and was taken to a hospital. According to a witness, “the SUV hit the car on the front which was like a launching ramp, flipping over the SUV.”

Wednesday, March 27

Long Beach Boulevard and Third Street. A 1 p.m. fire that burned a car and a van that were parked side-by-side in the lot at adjacent to the old Acres of Books building was doused by firefighters in just a few minutes. Nobody was hurt, nothing damaged except for property. The books had been taken away before this Acres of Fire. 

Thursday, March 28

Bellflower Boulevard and Harvey Way. At 7:49 p.m., a 29-year-old man, confined to a wheelchair, was killed while crossing Bellflower Boulevard in a crosswalk. Kyle McNeley was hit by an SUV driven by 37-year-old Jesus Jorge Arias of Lakewood. Arias fled, but later returned and admitted to the collision. Arias, who had a valid driver’s license was arrested for DUI and hit-and-run. He was being held on $100,000 bail.

Saturday, March 30

Stearnlee Avenue and Parkcrest Street. At 7 p.m., there was an unplanned power outage that lasted for a few minutes, reason not known.

Bellflower Boulevard north of Arbor Road. At 11:40 p.m., came a second power outage of the day. Caused by a car that downed a power pole on Bellflower, the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. While waiting for an update about a return of power, a Nextdoor poster said, “The affected area includes Lakewood City Hall and the L.A. County Sheriff station, so restoration of power will be fairly timely.”

Sunday, March 31

600 block of West 14th Street. At 3:20 p.m., concerned relatives discovered the bodies of Long Beach residents Blanca Dominguez, 43, and her husband, Oscar Montoya, 38. A Long Beach police statement said Dominguez had suffered several knife wounds to her upper and lower torso and Montoya died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two guns and a knife were found at the scene, which police believe may have been a murder-suicide. The couple had no children. “A motive for the shooting is unclear and the investigation remains ongoing,” the police statement said.

Monday, April 1

2700 block of Orange Avenue. At 10:15 a.m., a Piper PA28 had just taken off from Long Beach Airport, when the pilot found the need to make an emergency landing. He checked out the 405 Freeway for that purpose, but found it too crowded for safety’s sake, so he set down on the relatively empty Orange Avenue as part of his backup landing plan. The pilot and the plane came out mainly unscathed, but fantasies to remake Orange into an unofficial landing strip were up in the air.

Pacific Avenue and Anaheim Street. At midnight, police were called about a city bus being involved in a collision. Officers determined several parked cars had been struck by the Long Beach Transit Bus driven by John Moreno, 48, of Corona, who was employed by the agency as a bus driver. Moreno was taken to a medical facility to test for impairment and was arrested for suspected DUI and hit and run. Apparently there were no injuries, except to Moreno’s career.

Wednesday, April 3

El Dorado Park. At 4:55 p.m., a two-alarm half acre vegetation fire broke out on the San Gabriel riverbed. Investigators determined it was intentionally set and arrested Armando Herrera, 43 of Long Beach. The smoke, which could be seen as far away as Carson, caused traffic slowdowns in the area, including the closure of westbound Willow between the 605 Freeway and Studebaker Road. The fire was  extinguished at about 5:40 p.m..

Some spot fires ignited inside the nature center, which was closed when the fire started.

Thursday, April 4

5200 block of Second Street. At 11:20 p.m., a male pulled something gun-like outside a watering hole, but on whom or why is not clear. Then he got into a car and left the scene. Police pulled over a matching description vehicle with four occupants at 11:30 p.m. at Redondo and Broadway. A passenger claimed he had been stabbed. Police returned to the original spot in hopes of finding another victim or assailant. Meanwhile, the wounded adult was taken to a hospital for treatment. Whether a gun was found is unknown.

Friday, April 5

600 block of Long Beach Boulevard. A man leaving a downtown parking lot hit the side of a Long Beach Fire Department truck. Police were called in at 5:40 a.m. and at 6:10 a.m., police arrested 30-year-old Reggie Vail on suspicion of DUI, hit and run with property damage and an outstanding warrant. Vail bail is $15,500
