Sunday, May 5

Golden Ave. south of Spring St. At 6:30 p.m., multiple shots were fired across the street from Birney Elementary School. At the crime scene, nobody knew nothing, nor was anyone injured.

2000 block of east Carson Street. Police responded to reports of shots being fired at 9:25 p.m. Officers found casings at the scene, but determined no one had been hit by gunfire. A possible intended victim chose a non-cooperation stance, creating a second case of “he went that-away” in one evening.

Monday, May 6

3900 block of 8th St. At 5:30 a.m. a fire broke out at the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority house. Three people were rescued by ladder from the second-story balcony as fire damaged the bottom floor of the structure. Two others were inside, escaping on their own. The fire was put out in 10 minutes, but one firefighter was hospitalized with a minor injury. The fire appeared to start outside the building and work its way inside, but the cause and origin were under investigation.

Tuesday, May 7

600 block of East 10th St. At 7:30 a.m., officers responded to an unknown trouble call, finding Sena Khim, 37, suffering from blunt force trauma to her upper body. Police arrested her boyfriend, 59-year-old Soeun Sam on suspicion of killing her.

Third St. and Temple Ave. A stolen 2016 Nissan van sped eastbound on Broadway from Alamitos Avenue at 11:25 a.m., police in pursuit. Two other units picked up the pursuit. The van crashed at Third and Temple at 11:28 a.m. hitting a 2013 Ford Escape stopped at a stop sign and several other parked vehicles. Fire department personnel arrived to take care of the smoke emanating from the van and to address injuries to a male, who claimed a broken leg and female, dog-walker Jessica Bingaman, 41, whose SUV he hit. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. Animal control arrived to help with the six dogs inside the SUV, only one of which survived. The suspect, Javier Olivarez, 43, of Los Angeles was hospitalized, arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of evading a police officer, felony driving under the influence, vehicular manslaughter and a violation for post-release supervision involving a robbery. A GoFundMe page to help Bingaman’s family with funeral expenses, her daughter’s college fund and other expenses was posted.

Pine Ave. and Market St. At 6:30 p.m., police officers found an unconscious man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Two men fled the area in a four-door sedan.

Saturday, May 11

800 block of Daisy Ave. A 3 p.m. argument between two men at the 300 block Daisy Avenue led to a building and vehicle being shot up five blocks away, with no human injuries. The shooter fled in a four-door sedan.

3300 block of Andy St. At 6:15 p.m., three men were injured in a shooting, which left one man in critical condition.

200 block of East Artesia Blvd. At 9:10 p.m., a man was shot, then took himself to the hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his upper torso.

900 block of Daisy Ave. At 9:50 p.m., a man suffered a gunshot wound to his lower torso and was treated at the scene for a non-life threatening injury. All but the earliest of these Saturday shootings were being investigated as possibly gang related.

Sunday, May 12

4200 block of Willow St. A Mother’s Day sushi brunch was disrupted by a prospective diner who loudly objected to the method used in fulfilling reservations and seating system, to the extent that a fight broke out and a woman diner hitting him about five times. She and the diner were cited, he was ejected, disrespected and probably unwelcome in the future. Said a Yelp poster, “there was a brawl on Sunday, after a man hurls racist insult and makes ape-gesture when he was told he had to wait to be seated.”

Spring St. near Santa Fe Ave. At 5:40 p.m., two men in a parked Jeep were shot at. No one was hit, though the shattering glass of the Jeep caused minor injuries.

Monday, May 13

6400 block of Obispo Ave. At 12:30 p.m., a young male attacked a 63-year-old woman and killed her. Authorities say Amad Rashad Redding, 27, a transient, used an electric scooter to bludgeon nearby resident Rosa Elena Hernandez to death. A bystander tried to help, but could not prevent the assault. At 5 p.m., Redding was taken into custody at a nearby convenience store.

710 Freeway near Del Amo Blvd. At 11:20 p.m., a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer was heading north, when a tire blew, crashing into the Blue Line yard. A 25-year-old male passenger was ejected from the overturned SUV. At first, the man was walking around, then said he couldn’t breath and his chest hurt, Paramedics took him and the 28-year-old female driver to a hospital, where he died. She survived.
