4000 block E. Ransom St. (4th dist., east of Redondo, b/w PCH/Spring): A group of vandals/thieves smashed windows of at least 20 parked vehicles overnight along the 4000 block of Ransom St. LBPD Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy says the vandals/thieves took cash from more than one vehicle and a wallet from at least one vehicle, left on foot.

Henderson/Cowles (1st dist. near Seaside Park). Two individuals (males, ages not provided) say two individuals (males, ages not provided) shot at them. The rounds missed but a parked vehicle was damaged; a man (adult) and a juvenile suspect were arrested.

4200 block Country Club Drive (8th district): A man and woman exiting their vehicle were robbed and injured in LB’s Virginia Country Club neighborhood . They lost a wallet and a phone. LBPD says the weapon used by the suspect was a BB gun.  

7th/Cedar (1st Council district): A man is shot/wounded while struggling with two suspects (a man and a woman, both adults and one believed known to him) who were allegedly in the process of stealing his car.

Orange/South St. (border 8th/9th districts): Crowd gathers at about 10 p.m. for what appears to be a street race. LBPD says crowd disperses without incident.

1600 W. 19th St. (one block east of Santa Fe Ave., 1st district): LB has its first homicide of 2020. A man is shot/wounded and a woman is fatally shot. LBPD says evidence suggests there was a long-term, ongoing personal dispute between the murder suspect (arrested) and the victims.

Palo Verde & Atherton A 32-year-old LB woman tried to cross Palo Verde Ave. north of Atherton St. at midblock (outside a crosswalk) and was struck by a vehicle, suffering critical injuries she didn’t survive.  LBPD stated in a release that “speed, cell phone distraction and/or DUI aren’t considered factors in what occurred.  LBPD’s release says the woman had reached the number 1 (left lane) of southbound Palo Verde when she was struck.

In its release, LBPD said an 18-year-old Downey man was driving southbound on Palo Verde north of Atherton in the #1 lane [left lane] in a 2019 Dodge pickup.  “The driver cooperated with the investigation and was released from the scene pending further investigation.  Speed, cell phone distraction and/or D.U.I. are not considered factors in this collision,” LBPD’s release states.

A heartfelt grassroots shrine grew in the 1800 block of Palo Verde Ave. recalling the life of Kym Davenport, 32, of Long Beach, coupled with the further heartbreaking news that a little over nine years earlier, Ms. Davenport’s twin sister Nicole perished in a car accident when a driver ran a red light and hit her car.

Willow/Springs Park LBPD/LBFD responded to suspicious device reported at Orange Ave. b/w Spring/Willow. The L.A. County bomb squad responded and “rendered the item safe.” LBPD says it turned out to be an empty gasoline can.
